Local Visits

The school is situated ideally to take full advantage of the Castlecomer Demesne and Discovery Park. This is a fantastic woodland park with a wonderful variety of nature species, including tadpoles, fish, birds and many different species of trees. Sometimes after a nature walk we play for a while in the “Timber Tumbles” playground situated beside the Discovery Park.

History comes to life!

On Tuesday, 29th May, the children from 2nd-6th class visited the library for a talk on the “Titanic” by historian Michael Moylan.  It was a fantastic way to learn more about this topic, which has been covered by teachers over the past few weeks.  Michael engaged the children in dressing up and told us all about the Titanic in an interactive, fun-filled way!  Here are some photos….

First Michael told us how the ship was divided into 3 classes: first, second and third class.  The clothes in the different classes varied greatly in colour and grandeur as you can see from the children who modelled them!

The third class passengers…

The second class passengers….

And the first class passengers….

We then had a look at the uniforms worn by staff on the ship.  There were servants, sailors, officers and of course the captain’s uniform.

Michael also demonstrated how the propellers on the ship worked.  He made a model of the Titanic for all the children to look at.  Did you know that three of the funnels were working funnels and the fourth one was just for show?

Thank you Michael for a fascinating history lesson.  We really enjoyed it!

A visit to the Fire Station!

Date posted: 11th May 2012 | Category Blog, Class Work, Local Visits, Middle Classroom, SPHE |

The children in 2nd and 3rd Class along with teachers Ms.O Brien, Mrs. Dooley, Ms. Cobbe and myself went to visit the local fire station on Thursday 3rd May to learn more about the work of a station and the firefighters who work there.  It was a fantastic trip, both for children and teachers and we learned so much.

Willie and Philip greeted us and the first thing to do was have a brief chat in the meeting room…

The children saw the area where the firefighters had to get changed into their gear.  Philip told us that they can get their fireproof gear on in less than 2 minutes…The children were allowed to lift the gear and it was pretty heavy!  They have to wear gloves, special trousers, a jacket, steel toe boots, a hoody that ensures their ears are protected and a helmet.  They then have to face a fire, which of course is very hot, wearing all this gear!

We also got a chance to see the equipment that is in a fire engine.  They had saws, brushes, hoses, generators, ladders, air tanks and so many other things!

The children got the opportunity to see how the firefighters saw through a car if they need to.  We had to stand back as they demonstrated this…

The most enjoyable part was sitting in the fire engine.  Here are some nice photos…..

Philip, Willie and the team do a wonderful job serving the local community. We had a great day!

Church Trail at St. Mary’s Church, Castlecomer

Date posted: 12th March 2012 | Category Blog, Class Work, Junior Classroom, Local Visits, Religious Education |

On Monday, 12th March, the Junior Room visited St. Mary’s Church in Castlecomer to complete a church trail on work covered to date in Religion.

The children worked in pairs to observe and record the features within a church. Here are some photographs of the children participating in the Church Trail!

The children really liked the stained glass window depicting the story of the Lost Sheep. It reminded them of Ms. Power’s assembly last Friday when they got the opportunity to see and pet a newborn baby lamb named “Lucky!”

The children worked so well on the Church Trail so we took a well deserved trip to the Discovery Park’s Playground! Have a look at all the fun they had!

On Friday October 7th the senior room went on a nature walk to the Discovery Park. In geography we have been studying Irish trees and we tried to spot the ones we’ve been studying!

We were divided into groups and given worksheets and clipboards. We had to tick any trees we spotted and note anything interesting we saw.

We also looked at some of the unusual sculptures around the park!
