Green Flag

We in Wandesforde NS are a “Green School”. We were recently awarded our 5th flag, which focuses on “Biodiversity”. Our Green School’s Committee meet regularly to discuss green issues with Ms. Power, the Green School’s co-ordinator. We are working towards being awarded our 6th Green Flag at the moment.

New Year Activities in the Senior Room!

2018 has been busy. In SPHE the children have been exploring the theme of Friendship and made a list of some Acts of Kindness they hope to do this year with their family & friends.

The children explored the concept of Foreshortening which is a technique used in  Perspective in Art. It creates the illusion of an object going back strongly into the distance. Take a look at the characters they created to demonstrate this concept!

In English, the children learned how to compose and write their own Limericks.

The children in the Senior Classroom made Banana Bread for the whole school using surplus bananas that were in school from our participation in Fresh Today.

Thank you to Mrs. Dooley for all her hard work in preparation for this activity 🙂

In preparation for Valentine’s Day, the children made their “Spin Art Love Hearts” using paint and a salad spinner! They are all so colourful and unique!

They also designed and made their own Valentine’s Cards. Didn’t they do a fantastic job?

In SESE, the children designed their own picture illustrating “Biodiversity” for the Green Schools In-House Art Competition. Well done on all your entries 🙂

The Senior Classroom enjoyed hosting the Annual Pancake Party at Wandesforde School. Thank you to Mrs. Dooley for all her culinary and organisational skills on this very busy morning 🙂

In Art, the children have been very busy designing their entry for this year’s Texaco Art Competition.

The children enjoyed exploring aspects of nature when local scientist, Eileen Canny came to visit and speak to us about Biodiversity.

Finally, the children responded as editors to various health & hygiene issues for the “Castlecomer Cares Magazine”. They gave some great advice to all the issues that were raised by the public! 🙂

Well done Senior pupils on such great work during the first 2 months of the year!

This month the Junior Room have had great fun in The Restaurant. We built our own restaurants in the Small World area and acted out in Role Play. We also created art related to the topic such as chef hats and pizzas in Junk Art and Playdough.

In Art we looked at warm and cool colours and made hot air ballooons showing these colours. We also looked at the artist Wassily Kandinsky who used warm and cool colours in his work. We made our own paintings in his style!

Valentines Day was celebrated when we made owls for our families.

In Maths we have continued in our work on number, Junior Infants have been learning all about the number 3 and Senior Infants the number 8.

As part of the Green Schools programme we made Bird Food Cupcakes from seeds, nuts, raisins and fat. We hung these around the grounds on Friday and by Monday they were gone! The birds are very hungry in Wandesforde in the cold weather.

We have had great fun learning new skills in basketball with coach Joe Byrne.

All in all a busy and productive month and we’re looking forward to more fun and learning in March!

We were thrilled at Wandesforde School to be awarded a Diocesan Eco Award. The award recognises the efforts we have made to be more eco friendly and encourage biodiversity in our school grounds.

Some of the activities we have undertaken in the last few years include planting trees, putting out hedgehog hibernation houses, planting a variety of flowering shrubs to encourage more insects to our grounds and putting out bird feeders in our grounds.

We got a certificate, wooden plaque and buddhelia plant also known as a butterfly bush 🙂

As part of work on our Green Schools theme of biodiversity the senior pupils placed a hedgehog house in our grounds. We hope some hedgehogs use it as a cosy home for the winter.

We also planted an Oak tree in our grounds for National Tree Day on October 5th.
