The Junior Classroom visited the Discovery Park earlier this month to observe and record aspects of nature around them in early Summer!
We saw “white candles” on the Horse Chestnut Trees!
There were beautiful bluebells to greet us along our way!
We saw wild mushrooms,
cow parsley,
some minibeasts,
a gaggle of geese and
we even got to blow a dandelion clock!
No trip to the Discovery Park would be complete without a trip to the Timber Tumbles Playground!
Our Train Drivers!!
Sand Artists at work!!
Slides & swings to entertain us all!!
We had great fun with our friends!
Thank you to Mrs. Murtagh for escorting us down to the park and helping the children in their Nature Trail Activity.

Local History & Folklore!

On Tuesday, 21st January, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class visited the Thomas Coogan Library in Castlecomer! Mary, the librarian invited us down to listen to stories of local people from years ago. She showed us a project that was written in 1938 by local school children. The project contained memoirs and traditions in the local area.
She also invited us to take part in a similar project this year. Over the next few months, we must collect photographs of interest and write a similar memoir or story to accompany the photo. Our work will then be published in a collection with other schools and hopefully children will appreciate our work in 100 years time!
We also had an opportunity to look at the census of 1901 and other items of interest. Some children spotted their family name!
Thank you Mary for a really interesting history lesson!

Autumn Fun in the Middle Room!

Over the past number of weeks, the children in 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the beautiful season of Autumn. As well as completing lots of Art activities in school, we also went on a nature walk to the Discovery Park. We identified many species of trees and berries and were constantly on the look out for animals and birds that are getting ready for the Winter…
The children were each given a sheet with lots of pictures to identify the many leaves and berries found in the woodland area. As we spotted them, we ticked them off on our sheet. We found some horse chestnuts…
Some mushrooms…
We also walked by the 2 lakes in the Demesne…
We also spotted a pot-bellied pig and a donkey! They both came over to say hello to us all!
After all that walking and searching, the children enjoyed a few minutes in “Timber Tumbles”, the playground in the Discovery Park. We had a great day…
Here are some pictures of our Autumn displays in the classroom…
Well done 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!

Fire Safety For Everyone!
Date posted: 8th March 2013

Last week, the children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class had a visit from the local firemen about fire safety in the home. The children listened to Richard Barrett, William Sherwood and Philip O’Neill discuss the dangers in a house which may cause a fire. The children had to identify these dangers on a worksheet.
The firemen also discussed what to do in an emergency, such as calling 999 or 112. A pupil in the class had to demonstrate how to stop, drop and roll if his clothes caught fire.
Each child received a money box from the Kilkenny Fire Service. A huge thank you to Richard, William and Philip for a very informed talk!

The Junior Classroom have started off the New Year with a bang in all subject areas! Take a look at all their hard work below!
We talked about the New Year and how we celebrate it as a time for new beginnings and new opportunities in Religion and History!
In English, we have been busy learning new letters. We made elephants out of CDs for the letter “e”
We also made “Octopi” out of toilet roll inserts for the letter “o”
In Art, we made yachts using a variety of media including paint, felt and crepe paper.
We have been learning all about how to “Stay Healthy” in S.P.H.E. We had an In-Class Colouring Competition with various pictures showing how we can stay healthy.
Well done to Malachi and Alice who won the competition!
The children enjoyed experimenting with magnets in Science. They particularly enjoyed seeing magnets work through paper and water!
Finally, we visited the library to return all our library books and of course pick out some new books for the new year!
A Big Thank You, once again to Mary, for reading us lots of great stories while we were at the library!
