As ever we’ve been busy in December in the Junior Room! Our Play topic was the North Pole. We learned about animals, houses and nature there.

In Gaeilge we had fun playing Biongó with our partners!

In Art we made Christmas Trees by weaving wool through paper plates we painted. We painted Polar Bears as well, continuing our North Pole theme.

In SESE we learned all about Irish explorer Tom Creane. He travelled to Antarctica! We discovered interesting facts about Polar Bears and found out where the North & South Poles are as well as the Equator, we labelled a globe with these places.

We discussed Winter and found out ways to help nature out such as feeding the birds. We also read a Christmas story called The Christmas Spider, who decorated a tree with sparkly webs and we made our own sparkly, web covered trees!

Senior Infants were busy counting and colouring in Christmas Maths.

In RE we learned the story of Christmas and made an Advent Wreath to count down the weeks to Christmas Day as well as keeping track using our Advent Calendar!

Finally we were delighted to perform our Christmas Musical “Hosanna Rock” in St Mary’s Church. It was fantastic to see so many families there and welcome them back to school after, especially when a special visitor called in!!!

Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas, see you in 2023!!!

Although the past two months have passed so quickly, the Senior Classroom have been working hard in all subject areas. In preparation for our Annual Design a Christmas Card Fundraiser, the children designed some very creative Christmas Cards.

Didn’t they do a fantastic job!

We welcomed Heritage Expert, Francesca Callaghan to our school in November and enjoyed participating in her workshop about children in Medieval Ireland.

The children designed their own Family Crest in response to what they had learned from Francesca.

In History, the children explored the lives of the Aztec People in the 15th and early 16th centuries. They designed their own Aztec Suns in response to all they had learned about their culture

The whole classroom have been reading the novel, Wildflower Girl by Marita Conlan-McKenna. This novel explores the Famine Period in Ireland as well as its impact on the lives of Irish families. The theme of emigration is also explored.

In Literacy, the children worked well at researching vocabulary they met in the novel

They also drew some very good predictions of what they thought might happen some of the characters in the novel.

In Gaeilge, we looked at the topic of “An Scoil” and learned lots of vocabulary and phrases relating to the topic. The children wrote their own passage in Irish about their school and drew lovely pictures of our school too!

The children drew their own creative cartoon animals in Art.

In Music, the children engaged in a Listening & Responding Worksheet Activity whereby they had to answer questions based on the music they listened to, as well as draw a picture of what they feel the music portrays.

The piece of music we listened to was Tortoises from Carnival of the Animals, a musical suite of 14 movements, by French Composer, Camille Saint-Saens.

In Art, the children created their own “Snowmen at Night” drawings using chalk. They explored the element of value in art which refers to the light and dark in artwork.

In preparation for Christmas, we all worked collaboratively to create our own Class Christmas Tree Display

The children created their own nativity scene using lollipop sticks.

Christmas decorations were also made for our homes.

We wore our Christmas jumpers to school just before the holidays and performed our Christmas songs for the Wandesforde School Christmas Performance! We hope you enjoyed it 🙂

On the final day of school, we played some cooperative games together and enjoyed pulling a few Christmas crackers with our classmates!!

Well done Senior Classes for all your hard work during a very busy term.
Happy Christmas Everybody! Enjoy your well deserved break and we will see you all in 2022!!

The children in the Junior Room were learning lots of new things during November and December. We were busy in play learning about houses and homes and Santa’s Workshop.

In SESE we were excited to welcome Heritage Expert Frankie to our school. We had great fun examining old artifacts and learning about life long ago.

We also explored the topic of homes and sequenced the story of The Three Little Pigs.

We discussed our journey to school and recorded three places we each pass on our journeys to school each day.

As we are now in the season of Winter we learned lots of things which happen at this time of year, learning how the trees are bare, days are shorter and the weather colder. We wrote sentences and drew pictures of this time of year.

We also learned about what happens water in Winter, freezing to ice when cold. We carried out an experiment to see where ice melted fastest in our classroom.

Finally in SESE we learned all about penguins including the names of different kinds of penguins, where they live and what they eat.

In RE we learned about the season of Advent, we created our own Advent Wreath lighting a new candle each week in the countdown to Christmas. We also learned all about the story of the birth of Jesus.

Finally in Art we made houses using fabrics as well as lots of colourful art for Christmas including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Christmas Baubles and Winter Robins.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
