Christmas

Christmas is a busy time at the school. We send the Christmas shoeboxes in November, we are then busy practising for our Christmas play and Carol Service, sometimes we go carol singing or have a Christmas fair. We also have a Christmas party and Santa comes and if we are good, we each get a goody bag.

Senior Classes end 2019 on a high note!

It was freezing, smooth, hard and watery.

November and December have been very busy months in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!  The children have worked hard and have learned a lot.  Have a look at what we have been up to!

In Religious Education, we learned all about the life and work of St. Francis.

In Geography, we learned all about aerial views of towns and our school.  We then drew our own aerial views of our bedrooms and gardens…

In Art, we learned all about the life and paintings of the famous artist Henri Matisse.  The children then recreated their own works of art in the Matisse style…

We also learned about Totem Poles in Art.  Did you know that the 5 animals on the Totem pole stand for different powers such as wisdom, healing, strength, bravery and wealth?  They are very colourful on the wall!

We discussed warm and cool colours of the colour spectrum and created “Leaping Lizards” using either warm or cool colours…

In English we read a poem called “The Farmyard” and illustrated some of the animals mentioned in the poem…

We wrote letters to Santa Claus and posted them in our local post Office!

We also wrote Christmas Acrostic poems…

We made holly wreaths with berries using hand templates….

We had our Christmas Nativity Play on Tuesday, 17th December.  It was called “The Inn Crowd” and the children did a wonderful job on the night!  Well done to all!

We made sock snowmen in art.  Don’t they look very cosy with their woollen scarves?

We learned lots of new words in Gaeilge based on “An Nollag”

On Thursday, 19th December, Santa Claus came to visit the children with a treat for everyone!  Such a lovely surprise, especially when he has so much to do at this time of the year!

In Maths, the topic of fractions put us all to the test! The children engaged in many class activities to reinforce this concept. They particularly enjoyed getting fractions of various 2D shapes which we displayed as decorations on and presents under our Christmas Tree!

During the month, we explored the topic of “Me” in SPHE. The children created their own treasure chests with pictures and symbols of what makes each of them special.

We looked at Pompeii in History and learned a lot about this ancient city. In support of all that they had learned on the topic, the children wrote their own historical newspaper report.

The children designed their own fantasy cups and saucers using various lines and shapes in Art. Didn’t they do a fantastic job!

In preparation for Christmas, the children created lots of colourful art work and decorations for our classroom!

We received a free Science Workshop on electricity as a result of all our efforts recycling batteries last year. The children were actively involved in this workshop!

The children engaged in some Christmas baking also during the month. They made Gingerbread Christmas Cookies

They also enjoyed decorating their own Christmas Cupcakes!

The children outperformed themselves in the Funky Kids Show. Well done on all your hard work in preparation for the night. Thanks to Denis & Olivia of Funky Kids for their enthusiasm & support of the children during this 10 week workshop.

In Maths Senior Infants have been learning all about spacial relations and drew Rudolph in lots of different places like between the clouds and on the roof.

In English we read a poem ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Christmas Lights’ and coloured in Christmas lights & Senior Infants wrote sentences all about night time.

In SESE this month we have been looking at the differences between day and night. We drew pictures to illustrate these after playing a sorting game.

We had a super night performing our show with the Funky Kids!
