On Friday, 22nd May, we held our very first Health Promoting School Breakfast in Wandesforde National School!  This initiative promotes the health and well-being of pupils and staff in the shool.  The Health Promoting School committee consists of 9 pupils from Junior Infants to 6th Class, 1 teacher and 2 parents.  One of our ideas at our first meeting was to hold a breakfast morning in school.  This plan came to fruition last Friday when we all sat down to a very healthy breakfast of granola, fruit kebabs, sugar-free pancakes, porridge, smoothies and orange juice.  The children came to school hungry but were soon satisified with this fabulous range of healthy foods.  Thank you to all the children,  teachers, staff and to the parents Olga and Jackie for their help on the morning.  We hope to do this once a term in the future!  Have a look at some photos from the morning!

April Activities in the Junior Classroom!

Date posted: 3rd May 2015 | Category Blog, Class Work, Geography, Junior Classroom, Music, Our Work on Display, School Outings, Science, Visual Arts |

Although April has been a short month after the Easter Holidays, the Junior Classroom have once again been hard at work!

In SESE, we planted our own sunflower seeds which are now growing so well in our classroom. Very soon, we will be able to bring our seedlings home to plant in our gardens!

In support of the work we covered in Science, the children drew their own sunflower in Art. We hope our sunflowers will look as bright and colourful as our drawings!!

In Music, the children have been learning lots of songs about different types of birds so in response to all their work, they created their own “Birds of Paradise.”

They particularly enjoyed learning how to fanfold the paper to make the birds’ wings!

We learned all about positional language in Maths & English this month. The children engaged very well in a listening & drawing activity based on prepositions!

We also went on a Nature Trail in the Discovery Park this month. The children engaged so well in finding all the aspects of nature on their worksheet.

While we were on the Nature Trail, we stopped off at the Elf Village!

We saw their homes…

their School…

the Elf Headquarters….

and of course their Sweet Shop!!

At the end of our Nature Trail, the children spent a short time together at  the Timber Tumbles Playground!

Finally, in preparation for Summer, we painted our own Spectacular Summer Suns to brighten up our classroom!

Well done again on a great month’s work!

Marvellous March Work!

4th, 5th and 6th class worked very hard and completed lots of work in different areas this month.

We celebrated St Patrick’s Day by designing our own shamrocks and mixing lots of shades of green to paint them.

It was Mother’s Day on March 15th and to say thanks to our mums for all they do for us we made them pretty bookmarks. In English class we wrote acrostic poems for our mums too.

In Geography we spent this month looking at and studying the country France. We learned lots of new interesting information and wrote up our findings!

For Green Schools we designed our ‘Transport of the Future’

We are working on attaining our Travel Flag in Green Schools at the moment.

In art we created our own Easter chicks by blowing yellow paint on a page with straws. We made the nests from matchsticks!

Finally in History we have been learning all about the Easter Rising in 1916. Again we found out lots of new information about this topic and wrote up our findings.

Happy Easter to everyone from 4th, 5th & 6th Class!!

Projects 2015!!!

Date posted: 6th March 2015 | Category Blog, Class Work, Geography, Middle Classroom, Our Work on Display, Science |

Well done to the 7 children in 3rd Class for completing wonderful projects over the past number of weeks!  The children were allowed to complete the projects on any topic they wished, so you can imagine there was quite a broad range of things researched!  The girls completed their projects on rabbits, wild animals, dogs, pigs and cattle.  The boys completed their projects on bats and Manchester United!  They had to present their project to the class and then had to answer lots of questions from their listening audience…..and their teacher!

The children in 1st and 2nd Class had plenty of opportunities to look at the projects for a while when the 3rd class had finished presenting them to the class!

If you are in the school, feel free to have a look at these projects!  Well done 3rd Class!

January Fun In the Middle Room!

Date posted: 4th February 2015 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, Geography, Local Visits, Middle Classroom, Our Work on Display, Science, SPHE, Visual Arts |

We have had a busy January in 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!  We were very fortunate to have Mr. Stephen McCorry teaching the children for the first few weeks of the month.  Mr. McCorry did lots of lovely things with the boys and girls!  To start 2015 off on a positive note, the children designed stars and these were displayed in our classroom.  They intend to “Reach for the Stars” this year!

He also looked at the theme of Transport and the children compared photographs of New York a 100 years ago with the New York of today.  The children then worked in groups to compare these photos.

The 3rd class pupils have just started their projects on various themes.  We took a trip to the library to get some books for these projects.  While we were there, Mary very kindly read us a story!  Thank you Mary!

For SPHE, Philip, Richie and Drury came to the school.  They are members of the local Fire Brigade and came to do a presentation about fire safety to the class.  The children had to take part in various activities and received a pencil, certificate and money box for listening so well!  Thank you very much!

To support Literacy in the school, we have been reading “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in class.  The children completed a book report on the book and we looked at all the characters in the book.  The children came up with lots of wonderful adjectives to describe the main characters in the story!

In Visual Arts, the children designed Rock n Roll Vests!  They look very stylish on the wall!

The children in 1st Class painted “Robins in Trees on a Snowy Day”…..

In Geography, we looked at various homes and materials use to build houses.  The children designed their dream houses.  There are swimming pools, tree houses, chocolate fountains….what fantastic imaginations!

The children in 2nd Class completed a mini project on an animal of their choice.  They did a wonderful job typing and finding photos for their projects!

Well done boys and girls on a great month’s work!
