Our Work on Display

The children in the Wandesforde NS really enjoy doing art and we love to display our work for all to see!

The school year is certainly flying by and May has been so busy, after returning from the Easter Break.  When we came back, the children put their wonderful painting skills to work and painted their happy memories from the Easter Holidays…

In Literacy, we wrote a report about the events that filled our break!

In Visual Arts, we focused on the strand of clay and the children had the opportunity to create coil pots and other wonderful creations.  Here is a before and after picture of their work!

In Music, we learned a song about a Beluga Whale and then created our own designs on Whales to brighten up the corridor and classroom!

In History and English, we looked at the Book of Kells which is kept in Trinity College, Dublin.  We looked at examples of pages in the book, the art and work that went into it and then we coloured in pages from the Book of Kells and displayed them!

Well done boys and girls on a great month’s work!

During the last two years we have been working hard to attain our 3rd Green Flag based on the theme of water. With this in mind the Green Schools Committee decided to hold an art competition for all classes based on saving water at home and in school. Here are the competition entries.

A Fun-Filled February!

Date posted: 6th March 2014 | Category Blog, English, Geography, History, Middle Classroom, Our Work on Display, Science, Visual Arts |

February has certainly been a very busy month for all the pupils in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!  We started this month off by doing lots of research into the “Winter Olympics”, which happen every 4 years.  This year the games were held in Russia.  We all did a bit of research and learned about sports we had never heard of before.  Did you know there was a sport called skeleton, luge and curling?  Have a look at our display of work based on the Winter Olympics!

Preparing for St. Valentine’s Day was a busy time too!  The children made biscuits for their parents and also cards to show them that they loved them very much!

We also looked at Chinese New Year.  We made dragons, with fierce faces to put up on our walls!

In SESE, 1st and 2nd Class have studied various Spring flowers and birds.  We learned all about the cuckoo and drew pictures of this cheeky bird!  Did you know, the cuckoo doesn’t build his own nest?!

We also drew pictures of Spring after a long discussion about this season….

In History, the 3rd Class read the story of the “The Wooden Horse of Troy” and drew wonderful pictures of the horse….

As we are learning about birds in Science, we decided to create our own “Birds of Peacefulness” in Visual Arts.  Don’t they look pretty?

Well done on a great month’s work!

Fantastic February Work in 4th, 5th & 6th Class!

Date posted: 4th March 2014 | Category Blog, English, Our Work on Display, Senior Classroom, Visual Arts |

Although a short month February has been a busy time for 4th, 5th and 6th class. In art we painted our silhouettes, can you guess who’s who?!

We also painted cold colours such as blue and purple to create a sky and then cut out a white winter tree to create these winter tree silhouettes.

We extended pictures from magazines, matching colours as closely as we could using paints.

In English 4th class read a story called The Apple Tree and created these pictures after reading very carefully to make sure they included everything that got stuck to the tree!

We also studied  a poem called The Moon by Robert Louis Stevenson and in groups created these moon collages and stuck down all the things the moon shines on around them.

May Madness in the Junior Classroom!!

Another busy month has come and gone in the Junior Classroom!

We said goodbye to our classmate Conall and his family at the start of the month. We wish them every happiness in Scotland and we hope you are all settling in well 🙂

Conall 015

In SESE, we have been learning about “Water” so we made our own “Sponge Boats”.

Take a look at them floating!

We also drew pictures in response to the poem “Water, Water Everywhere”

In History, we have been learning about all the different forms of transport and how they have developed through the years.

We made our very own “Hot Air Balloons” to support the work we covered 🙂

Our “Sunflowers” are growing very well. Look how tall they have grown since we planted them in April!!

In English, the children listened to the story of “The Rainbow Fish” and they designed their own fish scales using oil pastels and tin foil!

“The Church” has been a topic we have covered in Religion this month. We looked at the different features inside a church and designed our own “Stained Glass Windows” in response to the work covered.

We made them transparent by putting baby oil on the back so that they could be seen inside or outside our classroom window!!

Finally in Art, the theme of Summer was explored! Using paper plates, the children sponge painted them and cut out the edges to create spectacular suns!

Well done Junior & Senior Infants!
