Another month has flown by in 4th, 5th & 6th Class. We have been busy working in lots of different areas. In Art we made our own clay pencil holders  and painted them bright colours.  We also made colourful reflective pictures.

In Gaeilge we listened to instructions in Irish and drew pictures based on the topic ‘éadaí’

4th class worked on symmetry in Maths and drew in the other side of these owls and ostriches, showing their knowledge of symmetry and great drawing skills. They also created pizzas with symmetrical toppings.

World War 1 was a topic we studied in History and we learned lots of information about the war. We wrote about it and made our own poppies.

In English 5th and 6th class read about polar animals and wrote up a report on an animal of their choice.

For Science Week we participated in a workshop in the library. We learned all about robotics and then made our own crocodile robots with snapping jaws!!

Autumn in the Middle Room!

A warm welcome back from the pupils in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class.  It has been a very busy few weeks and the children have settled in very well for the first part of the term and have been working hard in all subject areas!  In English, the children wrote about their Summer holidays and they certainly did lots of exciting things!

In Religious Education, we have been discussing “Harvest Time” and we drew pictures to thank God for all the wonderful things we have on this earth at this plentiful time of year.

In SPHE we have been following the “Zippy’s Friends” programme which encourages children to deal with challenges in their lives.  Zippy is a stick insect and we read stories about him and the children he lives with.  We then discuss what to do in various situations.

In Visual Arts, we made jigsaws with each piece depicting a part of our lives, such as our family, friends, school and hobbies!

We also drew self-portraits of ourselves!

In Science and Geography, we have been learning all about hibernation, migration and interesting facts about animals.

To support this work, we went on a nature walk to the Discovery Park, where the children had to identify various leaves, berries and nuts!  We had a great time!

And finally, in Maths, we were learning about 2D shapes.  To consolidate this work, we made “Over-lapping Shape Pictures” in Art.  Well done on great work this Autumn boys and girls!

We have Started School!!

This September, we welcomed 10 Junior Infants into the Junior Classroom. They have all settled very well into “big” school!

Senior Infants have also settled in well to their new class!

During the month, the children have enjoyed getting to know each other and also  learning new things!

In Art, the children made their own hand print paper plate using paint!

September wouldn’t be the same without cheering on Kilkenny in the All Ireland Hurling Final!

The children made their own “Cat Masks” and they had great fun waving them outside the school gates at the passing traffic!

They also enjoyed working with clay in Art. Didn’t they do a great job making their own initial letters with the clay!

In English the children have been learning and revising many letters. They painted turtles using only corks and cotton buds while learning the letter “t”

As well as this they made their own Slithery Snakes using metallic colouring pencils.

The children have enjoyed getting to know each other through talk & discussion as well as drama games this month. In support of all this work in SPHE, the children coloured in their favourite superhero picture and became that superhero in our classroom display!!

Can you figure out who’s who??

In support of Literacy in our school, we visited Castlecomer Library and enjoyed a storytelling session with Ann Marie there!

The children also got to pick some books from the library to bring back to our classroom for storytime!

Finally in Music, the children have enjoyed performing lots of new songs together and have helped to create our very own “Classroom Singing Chair” which the children can sit on when singing, performing or conducting the music lesson!!

A Big Thank You to Mrs. Doyle for all her input in designing our Singing Chair!

Well done to all the children on a great month’s work 🙂
