We continue to work hard on the topic of Biodiversity and the Green Schools Committee ran an art competition during February to promote awareness of the topic. There were fantastic and creative entries from all rooms, thanks to all for your participation. 🙂

Well done to those pupils who won their catagory!

We also had a visit from Eileen Canny, a scientist who spoke to us all about biodiversity in our local area. We had an interesting morning looking at a stag’s antlers, blackbird and green finch nests and different types of bees found in Ireland.

Eileen also presented the competition winners with their prizes. 🙂

We are excited to be back in school after the Christmas break and had a great month learning lots of new information.

Our play topics have been ‘Winter & The Arctic’ and ‘Weather.’ We learned lots of new and interesting information about both topics.

We made snowmen, snowflakes, reindeer and polar bears in Junk Art.

We created a small world in the Arctic complete with animals and a frozen lake.

We constructed an igloo from bricks and polydrons.

Our sand pit turned into a snow pit and we built snow castles with polar bears to protect it.

There was plenty of fun to be had at the water station too, we experimented with capacity and learned water can freeze in the cold winter.

We checked the weather each day. We used a thermometer to measure the temperature, a rain gauge to check how much rain fell and an anemometer to see the wind speed.

We also had fun presenting our own weather reports!

Linking to our play themes we made polar bears from cut up paper and winter snowmen with colouful hats and scarves. We also created stormy and wet scenes.

Senior Infants learned all about 3D shapes and we used cubes, cuboids and cylinders to make tall towers.

We also learned the number 1 in Junior Infants and all about the number 7 in Senior Infants. We made number pictures showing lots of ways to represent these numbers.

In SPHE we learned all about taste and found out there are 4 different types of taste – sweet, sour, salty and bitter. We had fun tasting all 4 and deciding which we liked!

Some tastes we liked and some we didn’t!

December has flown by in Junior and Senior Infants and we’ve been very busy in the run up to Christmas. Here are some of the activities we completed this month.

To get into the Christmas spirit we went carol singing with the whole school in the Discovery Park.

In art we made owl babies by sponge painting after we read the book Owl Babies.

We painted and used crepe paper to make Christmas robins and also created a choir of singing reindeer!

In play we created Santa’s Workshop. We had great fun making toys and wrapping them, building his workshop with bricks and making our own toys in junk art.

We wrote letters to Santa and posted them and we were very excited to get a letter back which the postman delivered to us!

Senior Infants were working hard learning tricky words this month and practiced making them from play dough as well as writing them in sentences.

We learned lots of information about nocturnal animals such as owls, bats, badgers and foxes.

We performed in our school play ‘Superstar.’ We were angels and animals.

We learned all about the Nativity and birth of Jesus in Religion and practiced our cutting skills to create these Nativity scenes.

As a treat for Christmas we went to the cinema to see ‘The Star.’

Finally we were thrilled to receive a visit from Santa and have a Christmas party! 🙂

Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year from everyone in the Junior Room! 🙂

We have done lots of work in Junior & Senior Infants since we came back from mid term break. Our play themes have been The Post Office and The Airport. We learned and created lots about these topics.

Making aeroplanes in junk art.

Building our own airport with a runway and control tower.

Designing and writing in our own passports.

Checking in at the airport.

Going through security and bag checks.

Buying stamps at the Post Office.

Making post boxes in Junk Art.

In Art we made hand print planes, linking to our play topic.

We also made various creatures from clay in Art. We had fun moulding the clay and painting it in bright colours when dry.

Our topic in Gaeilge has been Eadaí and we made our own Líne Eadaí based on the work we did.

Staying on the theme of clothing we designed our own outfits using different fabrics in Art.

In SESE we learned all about Barn Owls and created pictures of these nocturnal birds.

In Music we learned the song Miss Polly has a Dolly. We coloured in pictures of the song and sequenced them in the correct order.

We worked lots on being a good friend this month. We looked at videos, read stories and discussed what it means to be a good friend. We made a friendship tree from all our hand prints to show that we are all friends in the Junior Room 🙂

October has been another busy month for Junior and Senior Infants. Check out what we’ve been up to!

We learned all about the vet in Aistear this month. We had great fun making animals in junk art, constructing a dog kennel from polydrons and making a surgery in construction as well as acting out in role play, making animals from play dough & working with water.

Autumn is now in full swing and the pupils have been learning lots about this time of year. We made colourful trees with cotton buds and paint and went on a walk to see all the things happening in nature at this time. We learned all about Oak trees and made some bark rubbings.

We were delighted to welcome Paddy Madden to our school on Friday 20th Oct. He taught us all about different areas of nature. We looked at pond animals, mammals, hedgerows and insects.

Senior Infants were revising their numbers and used play dough to shape the number, counted it out in cubes, as well as putting the correct number of apples on the tree!

In SPHE we learned all about different feelings and drew our own happy faces 🙂

Halloween is upon us and we made Spooky Pumpkins and coloured in scary pictures.

We also made some trees on crepe paper using autumn colours. The light shone through them when we put them up on the windows.

To celebrate Halloween we had fun dressing up in scary, spooky costumes and making rice krispie monsters!
