We were thrilled at Wandesforde School to be awarded a Diocesan Eco Award. The award recognises the efforts we have made to be more eco friendly and encourage biodiversity in our school grounds.

Some of the activities we have undertaken in the last few years include planting trees, putting out hedgehog hibernation houses, planting a variety of flowering shrubs to encourage more insects to our grounds and putting out bird feeders in our grounds.

We got a certificate, wooden plaque and buddhelia plant also known as a butterfly bush ūüôā

A New Year Begins in the Junior Room

September has been a fun filled and busy month in the Junior room. Check out what we’ve been up to below!

To begin with we drew colourful pictures of our summer holidays.

In Art we made squirrel mobiles and we had looked at these interesting animals in Science.

We’ve been revising letters in Senior Infants and learning our sounds in Junior Infants. We made colourful letters from our names using oil pastels and black paint. There were patterns etched in the paint to show the letter underneath.

We’ve also been learning all about how we’ve grown since we were babies. We have a clothes timeline in the corridor as well as photos of us as babies and now, showing how we’ve grown and changed over the years.

To show that we are all unique we made hand prints with colourful frames.

In music we learned lots of nursery rhymes, as well as singing them we coloured and  cut out pictures of them and put them in order.

We learned all about homes and houses through play. We made houses with a driveway in the sand. There were houses made from polydrons and wooden bricks with
dolls house furniture.

We also made different homes such as apartments, houses and cottages in art using lots of different materials.

As part of work on our Green Schools theme of biodiversity the senior pupils placed a hedgehog house in our grounds. We hope some hedgehogs use it as a cosy home for the winter.

We also planted an Oak tree in our grounds for National Tree Day on October 5th.

Here comes the Summer!!

Date posted: 5th June 2017 | Category Blog, Class Work, Geography, Junior Classroom, Mathematics, Science |

During the month of May, the Junior Classroom have worked very hard in all areas of the curriculum. Following the Easter Break, they drew a picture of some activities they did during their holidays!

We welcomed 6 little chicks into the world during the month too! Every day, we watched them grow and at the end of the month, the children in the Junior Classroom named 2 of the chicks: Cookie & Bubbles!!!

In Maths, the children revisited the topic of Data and enjoyed tasting apples and recording the results from the class on a giant bar chart.

The results we graphed were that the Pink Lady Apple was the preferred apple while Royal Gala was the least favourite!

In SESE, the children enjoyed learning about Healthy Eating. They wrote their own Healthy Shopping List and also made some delicious fruit and vegetable bowls using stencils in Art.

In Geography, the children discussed the seasons of the year and in particular focused on Summer! In support of all their work on the topic, they designed their own “Flip Flops” to get us into the holiday mode!

First Class wrote their own Limericks during the month too!

They also created their own colourful characters!

Towards the end of the month, the children made their own cartoon creatures in SPHE who can really show their true qualities!

Well¬†done on a great month’s work!

We’re looking forward to all the activities that June will bring!
