Local History & Folklore!

On Tuesday, 21st January, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class visited the Thomas Coogan Library in Castlecomer!  Mary, the librarian invited us down to listen to stories of local people from years ago.  She showed us a project that was written in 1938 by local school children.  The project contained memoirs and traditions in the local area.

She also invited us to take part in a similar project this year.  Over the next few months, we must collect photographs of interest and write a similar memoir or story to accompany the photo.  Our work will then be published in a collection with other schools and hopefully children will appreciate our work in 100 years time!

We also had an opportunity to look at the census of 1901 and other items of interest.  Some children spotted their family name!

Thank you Mary for a really interesting history lesson!

My mother attended Wandersford School from about 1935 to 1942. It would be interesting to hear if you have any record of this. My mothers name is Eileen Stone and her teacher was called Mrs Latta, formerly Miss Howe. Apologies if I am wasting your time. I’m texting on my iPhone from Cape Lambert, Western Australia (see if the kids can find that). My mother lives in Rugby, England (that would be a bit easier I would think). Best Regards, Clive
