Middle Classroom

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd class pupils are taught by Mrs. Peavoy. We love to do art and craft, play sports and sing songs. Our favourite activity is baking! Here we are baking oatmeal raisin cookies. Everyone loves to help out mixing, weighing and of course eating them!

2nd & 3rd Class Read “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes”

The children in 2nd and 3rd class read a book called “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes” over the past few weeks.  It was written by Pierce Feiritear and illustrated by a 14 year-old boy called Conor O’ Brien.  It’s a story about 2 young foxes, Misty and Ash, who try to help feed their family during the cold Winter months and get up to all sorts of mischief on the way!  We really enjoyed reading the book and the children completed a book review and scored the book out of ten.

2nd and 3rd class pupils love writing stories.  In English, 3rd class wrote wonderful stories about animals!  They used great adjectives and verbs when writing their stories!

In SPHE, we completed a lesson called “Flower Power”.  We discussed our possibilities and strengths and recorded them on petals on flowers.  Some boys and girls are really good at soccer, others are really good at being a friend and sharing.  Our flowers are now on display in the classroom on our SPHE wall.

In SESE, we learned all about volcanoes, how they work and lots of facts about them.  We integrated the SESE lesson with Visual Arts and completed “Exploding Volcanoes” with lava, rocks and fire exploding from the craters.  Have a look at our work!

In History, we learned all about Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1621 in America.  Turkeys are eaten at Thanksgiving, just as we eat them for Christmas in Ireland.  We used our handprints to make “Thanksgiving Turkeys” in Art!

Hallowe’en Fun in 2nd & 3rd Class

Date posted: 28th October 2011 | Category Blog, Class Work, Hallowe'en, Middle Classroom, Visual Arts |

We really enjoyed doing lots of art and craft for Hallowe’en in our classroom.  We made some masks using feathers, glittery paper and Hallowe’en shapes.  Can you guess who’s hiding behind them?  We also made some chocolate apples covered in hundreds and thousands.  It was great fun!

The finished product…

We also made Frankensteins with moving arms and legs.

Happy Hallowe’en everybody!

Autumn Activities in 2nd & 3rd Class

Date posted: 6th October 2011 | Category Blog, Class Work, Mathematics, Middle Classroom, Science |

We have been very busy in 2nd and 3rd class completing lots of exciting things, some revolving around the theme of Autumn.  Have a look at our photos…

We made Autumn Frames using cardboard and tiny woodchips.  The children then decorated the frames with Autumn Leaves.

We learned a poem called “Duilleoga Deasa” in Irish and completed a collage of Autumn leaves in various colours.

In Science, the children were divided into groups and given a bird to research.  They were looking for information on the internet and in our class library and then recorded their findings.  We learned lots about the magpie, the robin, the thrush, the swallow and the owl.  Here is a picture of our mini-project on our class wall.

In Maths, we completed a traffic survey just outside the school grounds.  We recorded our results on a giant graph in our classroom.  The children were disappointed that not many tractors passed the school!

Dance is part of the Physical Education Curriculum and the children have been practising very hard each week!

Wonderful Vegetable Soup!

Date posted: 15th September 2011 | Category Blog, Class Work, Green Flag, Middle Classroom |

On Tuesday, 13th September, the whole school went out to the garden to pick the vegetables that have been growing over the Summer for our soup.  We picked parsnip, turnip, potatoes and even had some lettuce, though not in the soup!  As you can see from the photos, we had a nice amount of vegetables.  Thank you so much to Mrs. Dooley, who very kindly made the soup for the whole school on Thursday.  We also had some lovely fresh brown bread with our soup. Delicious!!!!
