Physical Education

Physical Education is taught by the class teacher for 1 hour each week. The children are very fortunate to have other coaches and experts visit the school to teach soccer and basketball. We also attend swimming for a period of 8-10 weeks in the Summer term.

February and March have been very busy months with lots of celebrations to prepare for as well as all our usual hard work in curricular areas!

At the start of the month, the children decorated their own St. Brigid’s Day Cross in response to work covered in both Religion and History.

In History, the children explored the traditions of the Chinese New Year. They enjoyed making their own monkeys to celebrate 2016, the Year of the Monkey!

The children also made their own Chinese Lanterns!

On the 9th February, the whole school celebrated Pancake Tuesday by having a Healthy Breakfast together with pancakes and other healthy breakfast options! Mmmmm!

In Geography, we made our own Weather Dials to support our work on weather.

The children enjoyed a trip to our local library to return books and choose some more books to bring back to our classroom library!

In Gaeilge, we explored the theme “Bia” and to support our work, we designed our own “Ciseán Picnic”

The children made their own Noah’s Ark in Religion in response to work covered on this biblical story

In assembly during the month, we had some unexpected visitors which really put a smile on the children’s faces. Thank you to Jackie Neale for bringing in Seán the lamb, Rasher, the puppy and Annabel the rabbit!

We celebrated Valentine’s Day on the 14th February and the children worked so well at making their own “Explosive Hearts” using wool!

For Mother’s Day on Sunday, 6th March, the children made their own colourful paper bouquet and card.

In P.E. the children have been learning how to play Unihoc. They particularly enjoyed playing “Sharks” and “Snatch the Bacon!”

They even got to practise their hockey skills in their costumes for World Book Day which we also celebrated at the start of Book Week in our school!

Before our Easter Holidays, we were very busy writing our Easter Cards to our Finnish Penpals and we also had to complete our entry for the Bishop’s Poster Competition. The theme this year was “1916: Rethink, Re imagine and Reinvent.” The children drew pictures of family and school life 100 years ago!

Finally in Art, the children made their own “Leaping Leprechauns” for St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody. Enjoy your Easter Holidays and we’ll see you all back at Wandesforde on the 4th April!

March Madness in the Junior Classroom!

Date posted: 11th April 2015 | Category Blog, Class Work, Easter, English, Junior Classroom, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Education, Visual Arts |

Another month has come and gone and the Junior Classroom have been hard at work once again in all subject areas. It’s been a month of celebrations too with St. Patrick’s Day, Mothering Sunday and also all the Easter Preparations!

We started off the month by making Easter Cards for our penpals in Finland. They needed to be done early so that they would get to them in time for their Easter Break!

This month we’ve focused on doing paired work in many subject areas!

In P.E. we did simple paired orienteering activities whereby the children had to explore and investigate the area around them and record the information they found on a worksheet.

The children also made their own St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Sheet in pairs and then the whole class played Bingo together which is always great fun!!

In Art the children “Took a line for a walk in a Shamrock” to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

In SESE, the children learned the names of many garden and Spring flowers. In support of all that they learned, they made a beautiful Spring bouquet which they brought home as another gift for Mothering Sunday!

For Mothering Sunday, the children made some chocolate hearts together which they wrapped up in tin foil and put inside their  colourful teacup cards! We also put a teabag inside as what’s a teacup without a teabag! 🙂

In preparation for Book Week, the children made their own spaceships out of paper plates to show you the places and people they like to visit in stories.

We think “Reading is out of this World!”

Ms. Power and the Green School’s Committee put our drawing to the test in a Whole School Drawing Competition on Transport!

Didn’t they do a great job drawing their favourite form of transport!

In Religion, the children drew pictures for the Bishop’s Annual Poster Competition on the theme of “Travelling in the Bible”

Before our Easter Holidays, we worked with clay to make our very own Egg Cups!

Finally and most importantly, we got to make & decorate our Easter Cupcakes and Basket for our Easter Treats!!

Well done Junior Classroom on such great work during a very, very busy month!

Happy Easter Everybody! 🙂

Date posted: 23rd June 2014 | Category Blog, Junior Classroom, Middle Classroom, Physical Education, Senior Classroom, Sport, Sports |

On Thursday 19th June, we had our annual sports’ day in Wandesforde National School!  The weather was fantastic and all the children enjoyed the day.  Each year, we focus on having fun and we encourage the children to enjoy the day as much as possible.  We have 5 races and the children are divided into Junior and Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd Class, 3rd and 4th Class and 5th and 6th Class for the races!

Have a look at some of the photos from the day!  First up were the races!  We had sprints and hurdles…..

Next was the egg and spoon races…   Steady hands boys and girls!

The sack race was the next challenge!

The best and funniest race was the 3-legged race, where children had to work together to get to the end….!

The children enjoyed the day with their friends…

In the afternoon, all the children received a medal for their efforts on Sports’ Day.  We also had our prize-giving for great attendance during the year and gave out the swimming certificates!

A boy and a girl from each classroom were also awarded a trophy for being an all round great sportsperson, showing fairness at playtime and being a great team-player.  Well done boys and girls!

On Saturday, 7th June 2014, our school hosted the annual sponsored cycle.  It started off as a pretty dull, cloudy morning but thankfully, later in the day the sun was shining!

Registration started around 8 am and people had the opportunity to have a cuppa and a chat before they set off on the various cycle routes, ranging from 5 km for the children to 125 km for the adults!

The children then had plenty of opportunities to practise their cycling skills on a simple course set up by Stephen Kerr.  This was a huge hit with the boys and girls!

It was soon time for the cyclists to set off on their long cycle with options for all abilities including a 40 km route, a 100 km route and a 125 km route also!

The school children were next to take off on their 5 km cycle around the wellie race route…a few tough hills ahead of them!

But we all got back to school safely….

As always, there was a wonderful spread for us all when we returned to school…

There was face painting….

Chips for the children….

A bouncy castle…….

Thank you so much to everyone who made this year’s cycle a huge success.  A special thank you to the Parents’ Association for their planning and work over the past number of months! To all the children for their hard efforts in fundraising, to all who registered, stewarded, prepared food, served food, supervised, drove cars, tidied up and supported us in anyway, Thank You So Much!!!!!  Over €5,800 has been raised for our school.  See you next year!
