Music

Music is taught by the class teacher. The children have the opportunity to learn the piano and guitar from 1st class onwards if they wish. Every second year, we have a group called the “Funky Kids Workshop” in our school to help us put on a wonderful show. Denis and Olivia from the Funky Kids group teach us songs, dances and we then perform them at a Christmas Show for parents and the school community. We also record the show on DVD for parents to purchase! Each week in Assembly, we sing a song and once a year, we attend a Children’s Choral Festival with the other schools in the Diocese.

Best Wishes!

On Friday, 12th October 2012, we had a special presentation to Mrs. Lanigan, our wonderful piano teacher , who has recently retired.  The children presented her with a bouquet of flowers, a gift voucher and a card, signed by the whole school.  Mrs. Lanigan has taught piano for over 30 years in the school.  We wish her the very best as she embarks on a new chapter in her life and hopes she comes back to visit us all whenever she can.  The staff enjoyed a piece of cake and coffee in the staff room at break time with Mrs.Lanigan.  Here are some lovely photos of all the children with Mrs. Lanigan….

April has been a short month however the Junior Classroom have covered a lot of new and exciting topics!

To begin with they have been busy learning about “Frogs”. In Assembly with Mr. Boland, the children sang a song with percussion to the whole school about “Twenty Froggies”. They all did a great job so well done to all!

In Science, the children have been learning about the lifecycle of a frog as well as some interesting facts about frogs. Did you know that a frog can jump 20 times its own body length? Take a look at their “Itsy Bitsy Frog Booklets” on display in the classroom!

In Art, the children made frogs out of toilet roll holders!

As well as this, the children learned how to take a line for a walk!! Take a look at some of the pathways the children created with their line.

In Gaeilge, the children have been learning the phrase “Is féidir liom…” to support work covered to date on actions and hobbies. They each got to draw one thing that they can do. Take a look at their lovely drawings!

Finally in Music, the children learned the words of the song “How much is that doggie in the window?” They each had to draw a dog which they think might have been in the window for this song!

In History, the school have been busy learning about the Titanic which sank 100 years ago. The library has organised an art competition on the theme of the Titanic. Take a look at our entries from the Junior Room

In art we have created lots of beautiful work in January and February. We designed wonderful stained glass windows.

We used tin foil, tracing paper and glitter to create these frosty winter branches.

In music we listened to The Snow is Dancing by Debussy and drew these pictures, inspired by the music.

Christmas Celebrations in 2nd & 3rd Class!

Date posted: 21st December 2011 | Category Blog, Christmas, English, Middle Classroom, Music, Visual Arts |

2nd and 3rd Class boys and girls have been very busy for the past few weeks decorating the classroom, writing stories and having fun as Christmas approaches!  We really enjoyed doing lots of Art & Craft from the various strands of the Primary School Curriculum.  We painted some love pictures of Rudolph, Santa, Christmas Trees and Angels and displayed them in the classroom!

We also made felt stockings, sewed them together and decorated them with different characters…

The boys and girls painted glass jars with holly, presents, santa claus and rudolph and then we each placed a tea-light candle into the jars.  They will look very well when they are lit up on Christmas Eve!

In English the children wrote wonderful stories about Christmas adventures.  Come into the class and have a look at them.  Some boys and girls wrote stories that were 5 pages long!

We also made Christmas decorations for our trees at home.  We used Hama Beads to create the designs and then they were ironed by a teacher to melt the beads together.  They look so nice on the wall in our classroom and will look nicer on the Christmas tree!

In Music, we learned a song called “The Christmas Alphabet”.  The children worked in pairs to depict the meaning of each letter and the word is on display in our classroom!

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year!
