The Middle Room bring the house down and build a crib!

The highlight of December activities had to be the Christmas show where the Middle Room performed a mix of modern and classic musical numbers, including some from Frozen and Oliver. All the children’s practice and hard work paid off as the children brought the house down for both shows. Well done all!
Art during December was all about making a Christmas Crib diorama. The children covered a shoe box, created a background scene and created clay figurines for their crib. It was like Santa’s workshop every week during art!
The budding writers in the Middle Room penned some Christmas stories and poetry. The children spent a lot of November planning, editing and writing stories about a mysterious person on a roof. We eventually ‘published’ the stories in a book entitled ‘The Man on the Roof and other stories’. The book is available in the classroom for everyone to read.
The children in 3rd and 4th also wrote some diamante poems about The Grinch and Santa also. A diamante poem is a concise poetry form that extracts the essence of two opposing things and uses the children’s knowledge of nouns, verbs and adjectives.
For example

Selfish, nosy
Stealing, bullying, tripping
Lair, dogs, elves, reindeer
Laughing, giving, sharing
Jolly, fat
Santa
Second class wrote an acrostic poem about Santa.
The children also enjoyed their trip to cinema to see Moanna (the teacher’s also enjoyed the trip). The children gave the film their 5 star seal of approval.

A Delightful December in the Senior Room

December has been an eventful month for 4th, 5th & 6th Class. In Art we created colourful winter trees and highlighted them in gold and silver. We also shaded in our Christmas stars using different colour paints.
The preparation for Christmas is known as Advent and in Religious Education we learned all about this important time of year. We also made our own Advent Wreath and each pupil put some greenery in it. To mark Advent we also have an Advent Calendar with each pupil getting a treat from it during December.
An Nollaig was our theme in Gaeilge and we made our own Cartaí Nollaig and wrote poems ‘as Gaeilge’ based on the topic An Nollaig.
In English 4th Class read all about spiders and wrote up reports about them.
They also read The Apple Tree and illustrated all the things which got stuck to the tree.
5th and 6th Class read a story called ‘Christmas’ and completed character investigation sheets about the main character Jimeen in the story.
We performed our play ‘Hosanna Rock’ in St. Mary’s on the 21st. Well done to all the boys and girls on a great performance. Finally a special visitor came to see us on Monday …… Santa!! We all enjoyed his visit and gifts! 🙂

Another Successful Book Week!
Book Week at Wandesforde National School continues to be as successful as ever. This year, Irish author, Liam Farrell visited our school during Book Week to further support the children’s interest and enthusiasm in literature. Below is just a glimpse of Liam’s fun and interactive workshops with the children!

Congratulations to all the winners who each got to pick a free book from the Book Fair. Well done to all the children for dressing up so creatively during Book Week. Your costumes were so creative and we hope you enjoyed being in character for the day!!
Finally, our Book Fair total this year was a whopping €849.17. Thank you to all the families who supported the Book Fair. A big thank you also to all the school staff and children who helped out in any way during Book Week. Your support is very much appreciated!. The school now look forward to receiving €510 in Book Commission for our classroom libraries!!

December has been a very busy month for the school. We had our Funky Kids Show the week of the Christmas Holidays which the children really enjoyed!
The children did a fantastic job on both nights! Well done to you all! Thank You to Denis and Olivia for all their time, patience and energy in the production of yet another great show!
In preparation for Christmas, we first posted our letters to Santa in the Post Office.
We also drew Christmas Pictures for our penpals in Finland
and we played “Reindeer Drive” with our partners in Maths.
We listened to the story of “The Gingerbread Man” in English and explored the theme further by making our very own Gingerbread Men!
Firstly, we made the dough and then used cutters to create the shape of the Gingerbread Man!
We all had a job to do in baking these delicious treats!
In Art, we painted and designed our own Gingerbread Men using metallic paints!
This month, the children have also been learning about penguins and their habitat in SESE. In support of this, we made penguins using toilet roll inserts!
Did you know that a baby penguin is called a “chick”
In R.E. the children created their own Angels from the Christmas Story!
You might just recognise these angels!!
Finally, the children upcycled some old CDs to make their very own Sparkly Christmas Tree Decorations!

November News in the Junior Classroom!

During November, the Junior Classroom have enjoyed learning all about the weather in SESE. We have been busy recording the daily weather on our weather chart!
We also made some beautiful rainbows to brighten up our classroom this Winter, using rolled up coloured crepe paper and cotton wool!
In SPHE, the children have been learning about “Feelings” They expressed their feelings of anger, sadness, happiness and fear using various colours and lines 🙂
During the month, the children investigated 2D shapes in Maths. In support of this, they traced around some 2D shapes and using a ruler they joined them to a vanishing point!
Didn’t they do a fantastic job!
In English the children have been learning many letters again this month. For the letter “w” the children designed their very own “Woolly Winter Hats”
The children also designed and experimented with their own helicopters in Science to see which fly the best and why.
We discovered that the smaller the helicopter, the quicker it reaches the ground first. The bigger the helipcopter, the slower it falls! 🙂
In support of literacy in our school, the children went on their first trip to the library in Castlecomer this school year! The children particularly enjoyed the storytelling workshop.

The children also got the opportunity to explore the library and pick some books to bring back to our classroom library!
Finally, we have been very busy practising our songs and preparing our costumes for the Funky Kids Show in December.
