Building a great classroom with Infants!

May has come and gone in the Junior Room and as always we’ve been busy this month!
Our play topic was ‘The Building Site’
We role played on site, worked in the sand, made constructions and various items related to building in junk art as well as making our own mini site in small world.
In English we drew plans for a building we’d like to construct and listed all the materials we would need to build it.
In Art we took inspiration from nature and made pretty blossom trees using crepe paper and bright, yellow, summer suns.
We wrote up what we have learned about the season of summer and made puffy paint to create delicious ice cream cones!
We had an interesting morning going on a nature walk to the Discovery Park. We spotted lots of signs of summer- green leaves, flowers growing, insects down by the river and we could hear lots of birds singing.
We had time after to head to the playground for some fun!
After our school tour to Hook Lighthouse and K-Bowl we drew pictures of our favourite activity.
In Maths Senior Infants were working on number and coloured pictures of crabs according to the number code. Meanwhile Junior Infants were working on cutting, colouring and gluing skills and created colourful rockets.

Bon Appetit from the Junior Room!

This month the Junior Room have had great fun in The Restaurant. We built our own restaurants in the Small World area and acted out in Role Play. We also created art related to the topic such as chef hats and pizzas in Junk Art and Playdough.
In Art we looked at warm and cool colours and made hot air ballooons showing these colours. We also looked at the artist Wassily Kandinsky who used warm and cool colours in his work. We made our own paintings in his style!
Valentines Day was celebrated when we made owls for our families.
In Maths we have continued in our work on number, Junior Infants have been learning all about the number 3 and Senior Infants the number 8.
As part of the Green Schools programme we made Bird Food Cupcakes from seeds, nuts, raisins and fat. We hung these around the grounds on Friday and by Monday they were gone! The birds are very hungry in Wandesforde in the cold weather.
We have had great fun learning new skills in basketball with coach Joe Byrne.
All in all a busy and productive month and we’re looking forward to more fun and learning in March!

Junior Room January Fun!

We are excited to be back in school after the Christmas break and had a great month learning lots of new information.
Our play topics have been ‘Winter & The Arctic’ and ‘Weather.’ We learned lots of new and interesting information about both topics.
We made snowmen, snowflakes, reindeer and polar bears in Junk Art.
We created a small world in the Arctic complete with animals and a frozen lake.
We constructed an igloo from bricks and polydrons.
Our sand pit turned into a snow pit and we built snow castles with polar bears to protect it.
There was plenty of fun to be had at the water station too, we experimented with capacity and learned water can freeze in the cold winter.
We checked the weather each day. We used a thermometer to measure the temperature, a rain gauge to check how much rain fell and an anemometer to see the wind speed.
We also had fun presenting our own weather reports!
Linking to our play themes we made polar bears from cut up paper and winter snowmen with colouful hats and scarves. We also created stormy and wet scenes.
Senior Infants learned all about 3D shapes and we used cubes, cuboids and cylinders to make tall towers.
We also learned the number 1 in Junior Infants and all about the number 7 in Senior Infants. We made number pictures showing lots of ways to represent these numbers.
In SPHE we learned all about taste and found out there are 4 different types of taste – sweet, sour, salty and bitter. We had fun tasting all 4 and deciding which we liked!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

December has flown by in Junior and Senior Infants and we’ve been very busy in the run up to Christmas. Here are some of the activities we completed this month.
To get into the Christmas spirit we went carol singing with the whole school in the Discovery Park.
In art we made owl babies by sponge painting after we read the book Owl Babies.
We painted and used crepe paper to make Christmas robins and also created a choir of singing reindeer!
In play we created Santa’s Workshop. We had great fun making toys and wrapping them, building his workshop with bricks and making our own toys in junk art.
We wrote letters to Santa and posted them and we were very excited to get a letter back which the postman delivered to us!
Senior Infants were working hard learning tricky words this month and practiced making them from play dough as well as writing them in sentences.
We learned lots of information about nocturnal animals such as owls, bats, badgers and foxes.
We performed in our school play ‘Superstar.’ We were angels and animals.
We learned all about the Nativity and birth of Jesus in Religion and practiced our cutting skills to create these Nativity scenes.
As a treat for Christmas we went to the cinema to see ‘The Star.’
Finally we were thrilled to receive a visit from Santa and have a Christmas party! 🙂

February Fun with 5th & 6th Class

February has flown by once again in the senior room, take a look and see what we’ve been up to this month.
We took part in the Operation Transformation 10 @ 10 on the 10th of Feb. We’ve also tried to keep up doing some exercise between classes since then.
In art we painted in cold colours and made white tree silhouettes. We also enjoyed mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and created symmetrical designs.
In drama we created sock puppets and performed a sketch with these which we made up ourselves.
In Irish we were reading all about the things we do every day. We then wrote up accounts of our own day and illustrated them.
In geography we learned all about the moon, did you know that when the moon is waxing it’s getting bigger and when it’s getting smaller it’s waning. We drew all the different phases of the moon. 
In music we learned ‘O Better Far to Live and Die’ from The Pirates of Penzance. We drew our own impressions of the pirate from the song.
We have been learning all about the Normans in history and we wrote diary entries from the point of view of Strongbow. He was a Norman who sailed into Bannow Bay in Wexford and conquered Waterford and later Dublin.
He also married Aoife who was the daughter of the King of Leinster, Dermot Mac Murrough. We looked at the painting ‘The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife’ by Daniel Maclise in art class.
Finally the pupils let their creative talents shine when they came to school in a variety of costumes for World Book Day!
