June has been another busy month in the Junior Room. We continued to learn about water and the seaside. We learned about sharks which live in the sea and what we find in the seashore around our coasts.

We carried out experiments to find out what floats and sinks and recorded our results.

We discovered all about the lifecycle of a ladybird, we created ladybirds in art and put the stages of their lifecycle in the correct order.

Finally we learned all about the season of Summer and drew Summer pictures including bees and butterflies, people wearing Summer clothes, flowers in bloom, having barbecues, eating ice-cream and going to the beach.

Well done to all the Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st Class pupils on all their great work in the Junior Classroom in June and throughout the year! Enjoy your Summer holidays 🙂

The Summer holidays are here! 2nd, 3rd and 4th class have been so busy over the past few weeks! Here are some photos of their hard work for you to look at! The theme over the past month was “Water” and many of our lessons revolved around this topic!
In English, the children studied the poem “Water” and discussed parts of the poem, adjectives, verbs and nouns.

In Science and Geography, we discussed climate change, global warming and how the ice caps that are melting are affecting sea levels. This was illustrated using ice-cubes as the ice caps and rocks as the land. The children observed the rising levels and drew this in a diagram after writing out the experiment.

In Visual Arts, we talked about the season of Summer and created pictures using pastels…

We created “Fabulous Flip Flops” for Summer too!

The children painted a “Water Scene”….

We made clay fish also….

To cool down on the many hot days over the past few weeks, we made strawberry smoothies!

Well done to one pupil, who learned all about Volcanoes and created this exploding Volcano!

The children created “Under the Sea” pictures using fabric and fibre….

To celebrate Father’s Day, on 20th June, the children made certificates and cards for their Dads!

Well done on a great month’s work boys and girls! I really hope you have a wonderful, relaxing Summer! See you at the end of August!

Another month has flown by in the Junior Room and there has been lots of exciting and interesting things happening in our classroom!
First of all our caterpillars grew and grew, turned into chrysalis’ and eventually 3 butterflies hatched out. We set them free (after feeding them for a few days) in our school flower beds.

We learned about the life cycle of a butterfly in SESE and completed worksheets on this topic.

We also made colourful butterflies in art and sponge painted green leaf backgrounds to stick them onto.

Junior Infants were busy playing games in Maths and revising their numbers.

We also learned a lot about water in our world this month. We labelled different places we find water around us and completed experiments to see which materials were waterproof.

We recorded which materials absorbed water and which didn’t.

Also in SESE we learned about the lives of lighthouse keepers and the job they did in the past. Then we made our own ‘Flashy Lighthouses’ in art, they are lovely and colourful, boats and ships would definitely see them on the coastline!

Finally Senior Infants were busy constructing skyscrapers in play. They were pretty tall by the time they’d finished!!!

The children have been very busy in 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class over the past few weeks since we returned to school after the Easter holidays! Ms. Delaney taught the children for 2 weeks and did so many fun things with the class!
In Geography, the children learned all about the Weather. They learned about the various clouds in the sky and made examples of them on the following sheets.

They recorded the weather on a particular day and measured the temperature, looked at the types of cloud in the sky, checked the wind speed and direction and discussed the best clothes to wear on this particular day.

In Science, the children worked in pairs to investigate which magnets were the strongest. They recorded their findings on a sheet and drew and labelled their work!

In SPHE, the children discussed “Bullying” amongst their peers. To get the message across that we do not tolerate any bullying behaviours, the children designed posters to display in the classroom.

To mark National Space Day, we learned about the life of an astronaut in space. We watched videos on how they sleep, prepare food and work! We then had to devise our own list of things that we would bring to space if we had the chance to go and drew an astronaut with their suit on. Did you know a spacesuit costs more than $15,000,000 for every astronaut?

We read a poem called “Planet Roll Call” and talked about the various planets in our solar system.

In Visual Arts, we designed “Crazy Hair Day” pictures!

We learned about “Pointillism” and created homes and houses using this technique.

And finally, we made “Turtles” by weaving around lollipop sticks!

Well done on all your hard work over the past number of weeks boys and girls!

We were busier than ever during the month of April in Wandesforde. In English we continue to learn our sounds and tricky words.

In Art we created paintings using the Pointillism method, we used cotton buds to make nice, bright balloons!

In SESE we were learning about day time and night time. We sorted pictures into day and night and also learned about the sun, moon and stars. We also drew pictures of the night sky, learned about Neil Armstrong, the 1st man on the moon and drew his rocket ‘Apollo 11.’

We also created our own Solar Systems in Art.

We were busy in the school garden sowing vegetables.

Finally we were excited by some new arrivals to our class……..baby caterpillars! They were tiny when they arrived but are growing bigger every day, we will keep you posted on how they get on during May. Fingers crossed we will have some beautiful butterflies emerging in our room soon.
