November and December have been very busy months in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class! The children have worked hard and have learned a lot. Have a look at what we have been up to!
In Religious Education, we learned all about the life and work of St. Francis.
In Geography, we learned all about aerial views of towns and our school. We then drew our own aerial views of our bedrooms and gardens…
In Art, we learned all about the life and paintings of the famous artist Henri Matisse. The children then recreated their own works of art in the Matisse style…
We also learned about Totem Poles in Art. Did you know that the 5 animals on the Totem pole stand for different powers such as wisdom, healing, strength, bravery and wealth? They are very colourful on the wall!
We discussed warm and cool colours of the colour spectrum and created “Leaping Lizards” using either warm or cool colours…
In English we read a poem called “The Farmyard” and illustrated some of the animals mentioned in the poem…
We wrote letters to Santa Claus and posted them in our local post Office!
We also wrote Christmas Acrostic poems…
We made holly wreaths with berries using hand templates….
We had our Christmas Nativity Play on Tuesday, 17th December. It was called “The Inn Crowd” and the children did a wonderful job on the night! Well done to all!
We made sock snowmen in art. Don’t they look very cosy with their woollen scarves?

We learned lots of new words in Gaeilge based on “An Nollag”
On Thursday, 19th December, Santa Claus came to visit the children with a treat for everyone! Such a lovely surprise, especially when he has so much to do at this time of the year!

Winter is here and the Senior Classroom have been busy in all subject areas!

We are reading the Class Novel, Holes by Louis Sachar which the children are really enjoying. They completed a Character Analysis Pyramid as well as a Predictive Exercise on the story.

In SESE, the children have been learning about the Celts and Early Christian Ireland. They designed their own Celtic Crosses in response to what they had learned and they also wrote a diary entry for a Day in a Life of an Irish Monk!

The children continue to enjoy Rugby with Noel Devlin each Friday. They engaged in Tug Of War too to further enhance their strength and skills!!

Our School’s Debate Team were successful in the First Knock Out Round of the Concern Primary School’s Debating Competition. They travelled to Kilkenny Education Centre in November to oppose the motion that “Mobile Phones should be banned for all Primary School Pupils”. Well done and congratulations to you all on a great achievement! In January they will meet Scoil Bhríde, Paulstown for the Second Knock Out Round of the competition and they are opposing the motion that “World Hunger will be Eliminated by 2030” Best of Luck to you all in your preparation for this debate 🙂

The children engaged in a small group activity in Art whereby they had to create their own Thanksgiving Turkey using a multitude of materials from our art cupboard!!

They also did Still Life Drawings of a Harvest Basket full of fruit and vegetables. Didn’t they do a fantastic job!

Finally, in preparation for 2D Shape in Maths in December, the children created their own colourful shape picture by overlapping various 2D shapes!

Well done to all the children on a great month’s work. 🙂

In Art we created handprint aeroplanes in lots of bright colours as well as practicing our cutting skills.

In Art we also worked with clay and made pots. We enjoyed painting them nice bright colours.

We were busy in SESE learning all about magnets and discovering what is magnetic and non magnetic in our classroom.

In SPHE we have been learning all about being good friends to each other and we drew pictures of us being good friends. We also made a Friendship Tree with all our class helping to create it.

In Maths we discovered lots about 2D shapes, we found lots of them in our classroom and made some shape pictures.

Finally in Geography we discussed different modes of transport. We made a graph to show how we all travel to school.

We have had a great few weeks of playing Tag Rugby with our coach, Noel!

In Gaeilge, we have been learning lots of phrases about ourselves in Obair Bhéal. The children also wrote a little factual piece about themselves too!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Castlecomer Library to see a very interactive presentation from weather forecaster, Joanna Donnelly on her new book “The Great Irish Weather Book” which she published with her illustrator, Fuschia MacAree! Thank you to the library for organising this great event!

We did an art appreciation lesson on Surrealism and looked at the work of the Spanish Painter, Joan Miro, who produced many famous paintings using simple shapes, bright colours and unique symbols. Below are the children’s own pictures in response to his many creative and innovative paintings!

In SESE, the children explored the topic of Autumn as well as Living Things and created their own owls in response to all they had learned 🙂

Music Generation is well underway at Wandesforde. The children are engaging well in their weekly performance workshops with Clare Kilkenny and are participating in a wide variety of vocal and instrumental activities in Music.

In preparation for Halloween, the children engaged in a literacy workshop on Halloween Haiku Poetry. They explored the technique of writing this Japanese form of poetry using 3 lines of syllables and adjectives!

We also designed our own pumpkins for the Castlecomer Library Halloween Competition!

In Gaeilge, we learned the poem “Oíche Shamhna” and drew pictures to illustrate the poem!

Finally, the children dressed up in their Halloween costumes on Friday, 25th October. They all looked amazing and as always it was a great way to start off the Halloween Holidays!

Autumn is well and truly here now and we learned all about what happens at this colourful time of year. We painted Autumn trees using cotton buds to create leaves in Art and made bark rubbings. We joined the dots and made orange, yellow, red & brown leaves. We also learned all about squirrels and hedgehogs.

We were practicing mapping skills in SESE and drew 3 things we see each day on our way to school.

In Maths Junior Infants have been learning all about the number 2 while Senior Infants have completed lots of work on the number 6.

Junior Infants are learning lots of new sounds each week, here are our ‘e’ sounds.

Our play topic has been ‘The Vet.’ We learned lots about how vets and veterinary nurses help animals.

We headed off to the local library to see the work of a real life illustrator for Bookville. Carol Ann showed us her drawings and helped us create our own whale and geese drawings.

With Halloween approaching we made some spooky pumpkins to go on our wall. We also made a Halloween treat on the last day and had fun dressing up in spooky, scary costumes.

Enjoy the Halloween break everyone!
