Special Occasions

We are a very busy school! Each year as a treat, we all go to the cinema at Christmas. This is kindly paid for by the Board of Management and we have a fantastic day. Sometimes we hold a Carol Service or Christmas Play in St. Mary’s Church just before the Christmas holidays and then come back to the school for a party. All the parents are invited back for tea/coffee and to see our Christmas art and craft.

Happy Halloween from Junior & Senior Infants!

October has been another busy month for Junior and Senior Infants. Check out what we’ve been up to!

We learned all about the vet in Aistear this month. We had great fun making animals in junk art, constructing a dog kennel from polydrons and making a surgery in construction as well as acting out in role play, making animals from play dough & working with water.

Autumn is now in full swing and the pupils have been learning lots about this time of year. We made colourful trees with cotton buds and paint and went on a walk to see all the things happening in nature at this time. We learned all about Oak trees and made some bark rubbings.

We were delighted to welcome Paddy Madden to our school on Friday 20th Oct. He taught us all about different areas of nature. We looked at pond animals, mammals, hedgerows and insects.

Senior Infants were revising their numbers and used play dough to shape the number, counted it out in cubes, as well as putting the correct number of apples on the tree!

In SPHE we learned all about different feelings and drew our own happy faces 🙂

Halloween is upon us and we made Spooky Pumpkins and coloured in scary pictures.

We also made some trees on crepe paper using autumn colours. The light shone through them when we put them up on the windows.

To celebrate Halloween we had fun dressing up in scary, spooky costumes and making rice krispie monsters!

The Halloween Holidays are here and we have had lots of fun in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class!  We wrote “Spooky Poems” for Halloween with lots of great adjectives!

In Maths, the children in 1st and 2nd were learning about 2D shapes.  They created their own 2D shape pictures…

We created “Spinning Spiders” in lots of funky colours in Art and also created our “Freaky Frankensteins” that move!

We had a visit from Paddy Madden, the Heritage in Schools Expert in Biodiversity.  The children had a lovely morning exploring the various habitats and specimens that Paddy brought to show them!

On Friday, 27th October, we learned how to make our very own lanterns in a workshop led by Tunda and Shannon.  These will be used at the light festival on Friday, 1st December in Castlecomer.

To celebrate Halloween, we all dressed up in fantastic costumes and had some báirín breac!

We made treat boxes and filled them with goodies for the week that we are off!  I wonder will the treats make it home before they are eaten???

We hope you all have a Happy Halloween and enjoy the week off school!

Our End of Year Service 2017!

Date posted: 23rd June 2017 | Category Blog, Special Occasions |

Wandesforde National School held its end of year service yesterday, 22nd June in St. Mary’s Church, Castlecomer.  It was a happy and a sad occasion in one, saying goodbye to staff members and a great 6th class who will no longer be with us next year.

First of all we had a presentation to Mrs. Kay Murtagh who was our learning support teacher.  We thank her most sincerely once again for all her years of service and teaching in the school.  Rev. Patrick presented her with a gift from the Board of Management.

We also had a presentation to Mrs. Carmel Doyle, our SNA who has worked with us over the past 2 years.  We thank her for all her help and support in Wandesforde National School.

We then presented all the 6th class pupils with Bibles and cards, signed by teachers and their classmates.  We wish them the very best as they move on to the various secondary schools.  They will be greatly missed!

We wish you all a very happy Summer!

The Wandesforde Chicks have Arrived!

Date posted: 16th May 2017 | Category Blog, Class Work, Science, Special Occasions, Subjects |

There has been huge excitement in and around the school following the delivery of 6 eggs from Nore Valley Farm almost 3 weeks ago!  Each day the children have been watching the incubator and waiting patiently to see if the eggs have hatched and the chicks have cracked their way through the shells!

On Monday morning, the 15th May, we were delighted to lift the insulated box and find 2 of the eggs had hatched!  Over the next 24 hours, we have welcomed 3 more chicks.  They need lots of warmth to dry out after coming from the egg but once they were dry and fluffy, some children helped transfer them to the box where they have lots of space to run around!

We are now waiting on the final egg to hatch!  If you are near the school, pop in to meet the chicks.  The children in each classroom have to decide on their names now…..We will keep you posted!

Easter has come round very fast and the children in 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class have been very busy over the past number of weeks!

In Gaeilge, we have been learning all about “An tEarrach” or Spring and wrote a story and learned a poem with lots of Spring flowers mentioned in it.  We also painted a giant Spring picture.

We also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and made some lovely decorations.

We thoroughly enjoyed reading books at the book fair…

In English, we wrote some great book reports after reading many genres of books over the past few weeks…

The 3rd Class pupils wrote some animal riddles for their classmates!

In Visual Arts the children completed a “Mindful Colouring” activity and created some lovely Spring Flowers.

To celebrate Easter, we wrote Easter Acrostic Poems and created transparent eggs filled with lots of sparkling things!

We also learned about the Easter Story and retold it in our own words with great pictures…

The children also drew pictures for the Bishop’s Poster Competition, the theme being “Great Leaders – Past, Present and Future.”  Here are a few of the entries…

The children visited the Barnstorm Theatre at the end of March to see a play entitled “Monday’s Child.”  They thoroughly enjoyed it and wrote about the trip to the theatre in English.

To celebrate Mothering Sunday, we created cards, bookmarks and boxes of treats for the wonderful ladies in our lives!

Well done to all the children on a great month’s work!  We wish you all a very Happy Easter!  See you next month!
