Special Occasions

We are a very busy school! Each year as a treat, we all go to the cinema at Christmas. This is kindly paid for by the Board of Management and we have a fantastic day. Sometimes we hold a Carol Service or Christmas Play in St. Mary’s Church just before the Christmas holidays and then come back to the school for a party. All the parents are invited back for tea/coffee and to see our Christmas art and craft.

We have had a very busy and productive few weeks in the Senior Room. In Science we read all about various types of rocks and went around the school grounds naming and sketching different rocks.

We also learned all about our eyes and ears and labelled diagrams of them.

In art we made colourful shamrocks for St Patrick’s Day and bright Easter Wreaths.

With Spring now here we also painted different shades of pink, green and blue and created these pretty flowers.

For Mother’s Day we made and decorated cupcakes for our mums.

We learned all about Guide Dogs and the work they do in English. We designed these posters to inform people how they should behave around these dogs.

The Titanic was our topic in history and we found out lots of information about what happened to this majestic ship, as well as the people on board, including crew and passengers. We wrote in the information we learned around pictures of the ship.

Finally in Religion we learned all about the events of Holy Week. We made wheels with each day of the week represented on them and wrote acrostic poems all about Judas.

On February 28th we celebrated Shrove Tuesday here at Wandesforde. The senior pupils made pancakes for the entire school.

They were busy on the day handing out plates of pancakes and going around with different toppings to everyone.

It was lovely to have the opportunity to sit down as a whole school and enjoy eating together.

Happy Christmas from the Junior Classroom!

The past couple of weeks has been busy once again! During November, the Junior Classroom attended a Science Workshop in the Library on the theme of flight. The children really enjoyed the presentation and made their own very colourful kites too!

During the month, First Class were very busy assembling some board games and learning how to follow diagrams & instructions!

They also worked imaginatively to create some Leaf People! They even gave their leaf character a name!

In SPHE, the children listened to the story of “The Rainbow Fish” and in response designed their own rainbow fish by making prints using celery sticks!

The children also participated in a DogsTrust workshop where they learned how to behave around dogs as well as how to look after dogs.

Heather from Dogs Trust left some pictures for the children to colour. Didn’t they do a great job!

They also enjoyed listening to stories created by pupils in 6th Class.

In SESE, the children enjoyed participating in a workshop on printmaking by Heritage Expert, Orla Bates. They printed various species of birds using ink and lino prints!

We displayed our printed birds on the Class Christmas Tree!

In preparation for Christmas, the children donned their Santa Hats and visited the Discovery Park to meet Santa and Mrs Claus as well as sing some festive carols!

This year the school was invited to participate in designing & painting colourful soldiers for Yulefest, Kilkenny. The Junior Classroom painted a girl soldier which was on display in the Design Centre during the festival.

In preparation for Christmas, the children made their own Colourful Christmas Clay Magnets!

The children practised their paper cutting & paper folding skills while making their own 3D Christmas Candles and Christmas Bells!

The children also posted their letters to Santa!

Finally, in Religion, the children learned all the names for Jesus in the Bible and displayed them on the Christmas Tree!

Well done to all the children for all their hard work in the lead up to Christmas. Have a wonderful Christmas break and we’ll see you all in the 2017!!

Merry Christmas from 5th & 6th Class!

Date posted: 22nd December 2016 | Category Blog, Christmas, Class Work, History, Irish, Our Work on Display, Religious Education, School Outings, Senior Classroom, Visual Arts |

The pupils in the Senior Room have had lots on in December to keep them busy!

We lit candles in our candle holders which we painted back in November.

We created Nativity scenes and Christmas snowmen in Art.

In History we were fascinated to learn all about life in Medieval Times. We learned lots about society, life in towns and the country and daily life. We wrote up what we found to be most interesting from that time.

In Religious Education we learned all about Advent and made our class Advent Wreath. We lit a new candle on it each week.

We also made colourful Nativity lanterns.

In Gaeilge we wrote a cinquain (5 line poem) based on the topic of An Nollaig.

Finally we had great fun at the cinema, we went to see Moana and at our Christmas party, especially when a special person appeared!!

Merry Christmas everyone, see you in 2017!

🙂
