Senior Classroom

The 4th, 5th and 6th class are taught by Ms. Wilson. They have a large, airy, bright classroom with lots of space. With 5 computers and a laser printer in the classroom, they are often busy completing projects and looking up information on the internet. Like all the other classrooms, the senior classroom has an interactive whiteboard which the children thoroughly enjoy using!

4th, 5th and 6th class have learned lots about nature this year – topics we learned about included birds, flowers and minibeasts. On Monday we took advantage of a break in the weather to go around our school grounds and complete a scavenger hunt.

We looked for various flowers, leaves, plants, birds and flowers. We found lots of interesting things.

Senior School Tour

Date posted: 31st May 2011 | Category Blog, School Outings, Senior Classroom |

Last Thursday May 26th the senior classes, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th went to Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre for their school tour. We had an amazing day there, despite the weather!

We left the school at 8:15 am and arrived at 9:20am. First of all we went and got changed for orienteering.

We got a bus up to the forest. There we were split into groups and had to go around and find different markers in the forest. When we came back we got to climb up walls and abseil down them.

The instructors played some fun games with us on the climbing wall where we had to balance and turn around while staying on the wall. The last person left on it was the winner.

After climbing and abseiling we had lunch at the centre. We all had sausages and chips which were delicious!

When lunch was over it was time to get changed and go canoeing. We all put on wet suits, life jackets and helmets and walked down to the river. There we practiced our rowing skills ……

completed tasks the instructers set us like collecting flowers from the river bank and ….

and got very wet!!

After that it was back to the centre again for the final activity of the day – archery. We all got some practice shots and then had a competition. Some arrows went a little off course thanks to the strong wind but some people managed to get a bullseye!

We had an amazing day. Thank to Ms Wilson for organising a brilliant school tour!

Local Project

Date posted: 9th May 2011 | Category Blog, Senior Classroom |

Last September 4th, 5th and 6th Class completed a project with Ms Hastings. Ms Hastings was here on teaching practice for 3 weeks. Their project was based on the town of Castlecomer and its mining heritage. The class was split into 4 groups, each completing some written and typed work as well as making a model of a local landmark in art.

Here is the written and typed work each group did.

They also learned how people’s lungs were damaged when working in the local mines and made a diagram to accompany their work.

Ms Hastings also did work in maths and Gaeilge with the class about the town. In maths the pupils completed a traffic survey to show the vehicles which went through the town at a certain time and in Irish they wrote about the local area.

Here are some of the models which the pupils made in art class

Wandesforde House

The Railway

The children really enjoyed completing the project and won Highly Commended for it! Well done to all the boys and girls in the senior room and a big thank you to Ms Hastings for all the fantastic work she did with the children

4th, 5th and 6th Class have been learning all about various water birds which live in Ireland. They read about gannets, cormorants, herring gulls, oystercatchers, dunlins, mute swans, whooper swans and bewick’s swans.

They wrote  information about each bird and drew illustrations to go with their work

Some of these birds live in Ireland all year round, while others only come here for our mild winters!
