Our hens have arrived!

On Tuesday, 7th October, we welcomed 4 hens to Wandesforde National School!   2 hens arrived bright and early by car and 2 came on the bus with some children!  They are settling in very comfortably to their new coop in the back garden of our school building.

Jackie, very kindly donated the 4 hens, which are 8 weeks old and called “Pullets” to the children.  We all got to meet the hens, rub them and watch them settle in to their new home!

Jackie also gave us an encyclopaedia so we can find out more about these friendly creatures!

The hens should start laying in the next week or so and we will all take turns to look after them and collect eggs.  Each day, we must water them and give them some pellets to eat!  I wonder who will find the first egg?!

We hope to sell the eggs and raise some money for our school tour next year!  We will keep you all updated on how the ladies are settling in over the next few weeks and let you know the names when they have been decided:)

What a lovely project for the whole school to take part in. My class were so excited to meet the 4 hens and I know they are excited about naming one of the hens too! Thank you Jackie for giving the children this opportunity to look after their own school pets!!

I think it’s a great idea to have hens. We had 4 (now 3!) and I love watching their characters. Such excitement when the first eggs are laid and I’d imagine they will all love taking turns to collect the eggs. Well done.
