Geography

Geography is taught to all classes. We use the Interactive Whiteboards, computers and software when teaching geography. We are very lucky to be situated 5 minutes from the Discovery Park in Castlecomer where we often go on nature walks.

2019 is well under way and the Senior Classroom have made a great start to the new year! They are actively participating in Dance Classes with Michelle from Dancewise and are really enjoying learning the dance routine for “Thriller”

Here’s a few sneak peaks at all their efforts 🙂

The children participated in a local art competition whereby they drew a favourite scene from the fairytale, Cinderella, which was performed in the Community Hall in Castlecomer

In Art, the children used pastels and chalk to create their own nightscape depicting the New Years’ celebrations!

They also completed their own New Year’s Resolutions in Religion & SESE

In response to all the work the children did on the Aztecs in History before Christmas, the children completed their own “Did You Know Fact Sheet” to recall material they had met.

The Renaissance was covered in SESE during January and the children enjoyed writing their own messages in Mirror Writing, a technique which was used by the famous artist, Leonardo da Vinci!

Members of 4th,5th & 6th Class competed in the local Credit Union Quiz on Friday, 1st February and did very well representing the school. Well done to you all 🙂

In Gaeilge, the topic of “Éadaí” was explored with all classes. The children completed their own personal clothing style profile “as Gaeilge!”

Similes and metaphors were explored in literacy. The children created their own poems using similes and metaphors on topics of interest to them!

In Art, the children created their own artistic scene from a small magazine cut out. Didn’t they do a fantastic job!

“Decision Making” was a topic that we explored in SPHE in January. The children were given many scenarios in which they had to make decisions and in so doing, they developed a better understanding of various decision making styles!

Well done to all members of the Senior Room for your continued hard work in all aspects of their learning 🙂

We also explored the theme of Pet Shops this month. We made Playdough animals and pet related items.

In Construction we made pet home like aquariums, rabbit and gerbil hutches and dog and cat baskets.

In Junk Art the boys and girls made pets and pet toys.

We found various pets in the sand and matched them to their homes.

Finally we made our own pet shop in the classroom and enjoyed acting out going to the shop in Role Play.

In Art we looked at the topic of Winter and made snowflakes using oil pastels and then painted over them with water colour paints.

We made winter mittens from tissue paper and contact and put them on display on our classroom window.

In Gaeilge we have learned all about ‘An Aimsir’ and made these colourful umbrellas.

Finally we made Winter Penguins using ‘cold’ coloured paints for the background.

In SESE we learned all about the topic of Winter, we sorted some winter clothes and drew pictures of Winter Scenes.

Also in SESE we were learning all about our sense of sight and hearing. We went on a walk outside to listen for different sounds and played games about what we could see around us. Then we coloured in pictures of things we like to look at and listen to.

Junior Infants have been revising the number 2 in Maths, while Senior Infants were learning ordinal numbers, ordering stories from what happened 1st to last.

November News in the Middle Room!

Date posted: 6th December 2018 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, Geography, Middle Classroom, Visual Arts |

November has come and gone and we are very busy preparing for Christmas in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class! Have a look at what we have been up to over the past few weeks!

In English, we wrote about our mid term break and what we got up to with our friends and families:

We have also been reading “James and the Giant Peach” by Roald Dahl. The children learned all about the life of Roald Dahl, how many books he has written and where he came from. The children wrote brilliant book reviews in 1st and 2nd class and the 3rd class wrote about cause and effect, characters and the plot. Each child scored the book out of 5 stars. Didn’t they do a great job?

In Geography, we learned about buildings, designing buildings and what materials are used and why in the construction of homes. The children then designed their own dream houses!

In Visual Arts, we learned all about Vincent Van Gogh, his very famous works of art and his use of colour. We coloured in some pictures inspired by his work. Did you know that one of his paintings sold for almost €66 million?

In Art, we also designed stylish umbrellas!

We also created pictures by printing with various things from around the school.

As Christmas is approaching soon, we thought we would be very organised and send our letters to Santa Claus! The children enjoyed writing them and going to the post office to post them this week!

Well done on a great month’s work boys and girls!

Date posted: 4th December 2018 | Category Blog, Class Work, Drama, Drama, English, Funky Kids, Geography, Junior Classroom, Mathematics, Our Work on Display, Science, Visual Arts |

The Junior Room have been learning lots in November, look below and see what we’ve been up to!

Our play topics were the Garda Station and the Fire Station. We had fun learning all about these topics making things in junk art & play dough, creating a small world play area with them,  finding items related to the topics in the sand & building Fire & Garda Stations in construction.

In Art we experimented with paint and created colourful fires, we also learned how to contact the Emergency Services by calling 999 and we made bright 999 signs.

Also in Art we used clay to make out own magnets, we rolled it, cut it and when dry painted it. They look really colourful on our whiteboard!

Our topic in SESE was electricity. We discovered how it travels to our homes and school and some safety tips as well. In groups we cut out pictures of different electrical appliances for each room in our houses and stuck them in.

We also learned about people in our community who help us as well as the Gardaí and Firefighters we discussed in play.

We are having great fun singing, dancing and doing art in Funky Kids every week, here we are working on our costumes for the night.

Senior Infants are working on their writing skills and wrote up sentences about The Park.

They were also busy in Maths learning about 2D shapes and created these pictures containing lots of 2D shapes!

Finally we supported 6th class on their 2km run in the Community School, we ran half the track with them twice. It was great fun and good exercise with our friends. 🙂
