English

English is taught to all children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. Oral language, reading and writing are all encouraged and promoted throughout the school. The child’s reading and writing experience in school can contribute greatly to their cognitive, emotional and imaginative development. The children love to write stories, complete projects and post their blogs on the school website.

The children in 2nd & 3rd class have been learning about the human body over the past few weeks.  As well as learning the names of various bones in the body, they got the opportunity to see inside the human body and learn about the functions of various organs such as the heart and lungs.  Above you can see our skeletons and below, a model showing the inside of our bodies!

We have also been learning about magnetism in Science.  The children were given opportunities to freely explore the properties of magnets in groups.  We completed experiments to see if magnets worked through various materials.

As part of the literacy strategy introduced in primary schools over the past few weeks, the children have been learning new and interesting words each day and creating sentences with them.  Here is our word wall, showing some of the words we now know!

In Art, we studied the works of Pablo Picasso and learned about his Blue Period, Rose Period and African Inspired Period.  The children then created their own Picasso inspired works and thought of a name for their piece of art.

We also designed our own ski jackets for the wintery weather and used various textured papers to enhance our designs…..

We also completed a collage entitled “Stormy Seas and Pirate Ships” using various medium.  They are on display in the corridor, just outside our classroom.

Christmas Time

Date posted: 22nd December 2011 | Category Blog, Christmas, English, Irish, Senior Classroom, Visual Arts |

It has been a very busy few weeks preparing for Christmas in Wandesforde School. 4th, 5th and 6th class have been busy doing lots of Christmas activities in different subjects. In art we made wreaths from tissue paper, then made bells and stuck on bows.

In English we read the story The Little Match Girl and then painted scenes of the Christmas things she saw through the window each time she lit a match.

In English we also read the poem The Night Before Christmas and answered questions on it. Then we sketched our favourite images from the poem.

In Religious Education we made a Jesse Tree for Advent. The tree is decorated with symbols from the bible to remind us of the stories of the Old Testament before the birth of Jesus. Each star on the tree represents a pupil in our class.

We read information about the origins of Advent and wrote about it. The work was displayed around our Advent Calendar. Each day a pupil had a chance to take a treat from the calendar.

In Gaeilge we drew Nativity scenes and 5th and 6th class wrote about their favourite Christmas things.

Merry Christmas to everyone, enjoy the holidays!

Christmas Celebrations in 2nd & 3rd Class!

Date posted: 21st December 2011 | Category Blog, Christmas, English, Middle Classroom, Music, Visual Arts |

2nd and 3rd Class boys and girls have been very busy for the past few weeks decorating the classroom, writing stories and having fun as Christmas approaches!  We really enjoyed doing lots of Art & Craft from the various strands of the Primary School Curriculum.  We painted some love pictures of Rudolph, Santa, Christmas Trees and Angels and displayed them in the classroom!

We also made felt stockings, sewed them together and decorated them with different characters…

The boys and girls painted glass jars with holly, presents, santa claus and rudolph and then we each placed a tea-light candle into the jars.  They will look very well when they are lit up on Christmas Eve!

In English the children wrote wonderful stories about Christmas adventures.  Come into the class and have a look at them.  Some boys and girls wrote stories that were 5 pages long!

We also made Christmas decorations for our trees at home.  We used Hama Beads to create the designs and then they were ironed by a teacher to melt the beads together.  They look so nice on the wall in our classroom and will look nicer on the Christmas tree!

In Music, we learned a song called “The Christmas Alphabet”.  The children worked in pairs to depict the meaning of each letter and the word is on display in our classroom!

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year!

Our letters to Santa!

Date posted: 9th December 2011 | Category Blog, Christmas, Class Work, English, Middle Classroom |

The 2nd and 3rd Class pupils wrote their letters to Santa last week.  On Monday, when the weather was better, we set off to the local post office to send them on their long journey to the North Pole!

We waited patiently all week for a letter and on Wednesday it came!  Santa and Mrs. Claus wrote back and thanked us for the letters and the pictures we included!  Santa said he was very busy making toys, feeding the reindeer for their long journey on Christmas Eve and packing the sleigh!  He asked us to leave out carrots for the reindeer and cookies and milk for him!

Come and read the letter from Santa on Wednesday 21st December at the Christmas party!  It really made us all smile!

2nd & 3rd Class Read “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes”

The children in 2nd and 3rd class read a book called “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes” over the past few weeks.  It was written by Pierce Feiritear and illustrated by a 14 year-old boy called Conor O’ Brien.  It’s a story about 2 young foxes, Misty and Ash, who try to help feed their family during the cold Winter months and get up to all sorts of mischief on the way!  We really enjoyed reading the book and the children completed a book review and scored the book out of ten.

2nd and 3rd class pupils love writing stories.  In English, 3rd class wrote wonderful stories about animals!  They used great adjectives and verbs when writing their stories!

In SPHE, we completed a lesson called “Flower Power”.  We discussed our possibilities and strengths and recorded them on petals on flowers.  Some boys and girls are really good at soccer, others are really good at being a friend and sharing.  Our flowers are now on display in the classroom on our SPHE wall.

In SESE, we learned all about volcanoes, how they work and lots of facts about them.  We integrated the SESE lesson with Visual Arts and completed “Exploding Volcanoes” with lava, rocks and fire exploding from the craters.  Have a look at our work!

In History, we learned all about Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1621 in America.  Turkeys are eaten at Thanksgiving, just as we eat them for Christmas in Ireland.  We used our handprints to make “Thanksgiving Turkeys” in Art!
