Welcome back to everyone in the Junior Room and a special welcome to our five new Junior Infants!

We have been busy in our first month of school, in English we have been learning new sounds with Juniors and revising last years ones with Seniors. We practiced writing them with pencils, on whiteboards and even in shaving foam!

We were delighted to welcome artist Orla Bates to do some printing with us. We made prints of lots of garden birds and Orla brought us outside where we made a nest just like birds do!

In Play we were learning all about houses and homes. We made houses from play doh and in the sand, we made household items in junk art, played with houses in small world and we constructed houses using magnets and polydrons.

We made patterns of houses and created different types of homes such as apartments, houses and terraces of houses in art.

In Science we also learned which items use electricity in our homes.

We have learned lots of different Nursery Rhymes this month and practiced our pencil control and scissors skills doing activities about the rhymes.

We learned about school in RE and coloured in school related items as well as saying a prayer thanking God for our school.

We were really excited to welcome M and M Productions back to perform The Wizard of Oz. It was a super show which we all really liked 🙂

We have been learning lots about summer in the Junior Room throughout the month of June. We had fun exploring camping through play. We made play doh and junk art camping items, role played on the campsite & made our own campsites in small world and the sand pit.

We learned all about Summer in different subject areas. We created fingerprint ice-cream cones, drew and coloured summer pictures, went on a summer nature walk & sorted out summer clothes.

For Father’s Day we made ties for our dads drawing pictures of their favourite things on the ties!

Our chrysalides hatched and we had 5 beautiful butterflies in our classroom, we looked after them for a few days before releasing them in our school grounds by the flower beds where they will have plenty of nectar.

We had a Teddy Bear’s Picnic trying summer food, ice-cream and strawberries as well as toasted marshmallows like you’d have camping!

Finally in Science we learned the names of different parts of a plant and all about different materials around us.

Enjoy the summer holidays everyone!

May has been another busy month in the Junior Room. In SESE we learned all about fish & butterflies. We labelled parts of a fish and learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We even got our own caterpillars which we’ve watched grow bigger and bigger and turn into chrysalides!

In Art, after reading the book, we made Rainbow Fish using celery to print their scales. We also made bright and colourful butterflies to fly around on our walls.

We enjoyed getting outdoors to do some practical maths activities like finding certain amounts of daisies or leaves in the grounds as well as spotting patterns in nature.

We continue to work hard learning our sounds and tricky words.

We were thrilled to head off to Rathwood on our School Tour in May as well. We went on a train through the woods, made our own teddy bears, met Goldilocks and the Three Bears and had a picnic, finally we headed to the playground for some fun with our friends.

Junior Infants did a great job drawing their favourite activity on the tour!

Ms Power and Ms Byrne got their hair styled by the hairdressers at the Wandesforde Hair Salon!

We were up bright and early on April 4th to make an appearance on Ireland AM! We had a lovely morning in the Discovery Park.

In Art we made colourful Easter Eggs using paper doilies and coloured card.

Finally this month we learned all about the weather, we monitored the weather and drew different weather we learned about.

Spring has sprung in the Junior Room!

Junior & Senior Infants learned lots about the season of Spring this month. In play we discovered all about Spring weather, baby animals which are born and plants and flowers that grow.

We used blocks to make Spring flowers
We made Spring nests and plants from play doh

We made birds nests from our magnets
In the sand we found cards and put them in the correct order to show what happens in Spring

We also created our own Spring Garden in our classroom with daffodils, snowdrops, primroses and hyacinths.

In Art we made St Patrick’s Day crocks of gold and used clay to make daffodil candle holders for Mother’s Day.

Continuing with our Spring theme we made colourful rainbows which we often see at this time of year from the sunshine and showers. We also created fluffy baby lambs, born at the moment as well.

We wrote sentences about Spring and drew pictures to illustrate them in English.

We learned all about water in our world in SESE, looking at places we find water like the sea, rivers, canals, lakes etc. We also experimented to see if materials were waterproof and recorded our results.

Senior Infants learned all about measuring length this month and we measured pencils but used sharpeners instead of a ruler!

In SPHE we discussed and explored feelings we have through reading various Mr Men and Little Miss books. We drew some of the feelings we’d discussed.

We enjoyed two nature walks this month, first of all we went to the river and explored around the river bank and woods with Eileen Canny, although it was raining we had fun!! At the end of the month we went to the Discovery Park and tried to spot as many signs of Spring as we could. Thankfully the sun shone and we had time to visit the playground at the end!

Ready with our clipboards to spot signs of Spring!
