Welcome Johanna and Kristina!

Last week, on Tuesday 6th and Thursday 8th May, we welcomed our friends Johanna Raisanen and Kristina Pesola to Wandesforde National School!  Johanna and Kristina are teachers in Lohtajan Kirkonkylan Koulu (try pronouncing that!) in Finland.  This translates as “Lohtaja’s Church Village School”.  The children in Wandesforde are currently writing to the children in this school and have received letters and drawings over the past few months.  It is a wonderful opportunity to help the children in Lohtaja learn English and a chance for us to learn a few words in Finnish!  Here is picture of the whole school with Johanna and Kristina….

Johanna teaches 5th class and Kristina teaches 6th class.  To help us in our learning, they brought us some lovely books from Kokkola, a town near their school.  We also received a book with various words in English and Finnish.  It is hard to pronounce the words but we will keep practising!

We also received a treat for all the pupils and tried salty liquorice for the first time!!!

Thank you to Mrs. Murtagh for organising this visit and to Johanna and Kristina for visiting us here in Wandesforde National School.  Someday, we hope to return the favour and visit you all in your school!

the children really enjoyed it – came home with lots of Finnish facts. I hadn’t realised they were the teachers in the penpal school. The penpal letters are a great idea too.
