Our First Month Back at School!

September has been busy for us all settling back into school after our Summer Holidays! We welcomed 4 new pupils into Junior Infants: Anya Morris, Alish Cooney, Theo Neale & Clinton Griffith. We also welcomed back Senior Infants and First Class into the Junior Classroom 🙂

To start off the month, the children made their own LiamMcCarthy Cups in support of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Hurling Championships. They had great fun waving their cups at the traffic passing through the town!!

In SPHE, the children have been learning about what makes them special. They drew a picture of themselves in response to all the work they covered on this topic.

In SESE & Religion, we have been exploring the theme of Harvest through story, poetry and song singing. The children created their own very colourful fruit & vegetable baskets for Harvest. Didn’t they do a great job 🙂

We also enjoyed cheering on the cyclists in Rás na mBan when they passed through Castlecomer during the month. An Post very kindly gave us t-shirts to wear on the day and also some flags to wave at the cyclists as they zoomed past us!!

In English, we have been learning and revising many letters this month too. The children made their own scarecrow for the letter “s” using rolled up crepe paper.

The children drew pictures to give us a snapshot of their Summer Holidays as an activity in History at the start of the month.

During the month the children enjoyed decorating their own cupcake as a little Friday treat 🙂

The Junior Classroom paid a visit to our local library for a storytelling session with Mary!

Mary has asked us to take part in a storytelling workshop on the work of Roald Dahl so over the next few weeks, we will be visiting the library to listen to some of his stories. So far, the children have listened to excerpts from  Matilda and have really enjoyed getting to know the characters’ names as well as  Roald Dahl’s language which believe it or not is  called GOBBLEFUNK!!

While we were at the library, we also picked out our own books to bring back to the classroom library. Mary also gave all the children a form for membership of the library. Some of the children in the Junior Classroom have already become members and now have their very own library card!

Well done to all the children on a great month’s work in the Junior Classroom!
