The Halloween Holidays are here and we have had lots of fun in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class!  We wrote “Spooky Poems” for Halloween with lots of great adjectives!

In Maths, the children in 1st and 2nd were learning about 2D shapes.  They created their own 2D shape pictures…

We created “Spinning Spiders” in lots of funky colours in Art and also created our “Freaky Frankensteins” that move!

We had a visit from Paddy Madden, the Heritage in Schools Expert in Biodiversity.  The children had a lovely morning exploring the various habitats and specimens that Paddy brought to show them!

On Friday, 27th October, we learned how to make our very own lanterns in a workshop led by Tunda and Shannon.  These will be used at the light festival on Friday, 1st December in Castlecomer.

To celebrate Halloween, we all dressed up in fantastic costumes and had some báirín breac!

We made treat boxes and filled them with goodies for the week that we are off!  I wonder will the treats make it home before they are eaten???

We hope you all have a Happy Halloween and enjoy the week off school!

September has been a busy month for all the children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class.  In RE we created our own talent tree, displaying all the great things we can do now that we are a year older!

We wrote about our Summer holidays, which are now a distant memory!

In English we read the novel “The Twits” by Roald Dahl and wrote book reports, with lots of children scoring it 10 out of 10!  We also made our own Mr. Twits with lots of food stuck in his beard!

We also drew pictures of our impression of the “Roly-Poly Bird” in the story.  The work was very colourful!  Well done to Nathan and Robert who won a prize for their drawings!

In Art, we created “Autumn Wreaths” using the colours that are all around us at this time of year.

We also wrote acrostic Autumn poems….

We also created “Owls sitting on Branches” in our Autumn themed Art lesson…

In SPHE, we created a jigsaw, showing that we are all unique in our own way, but fit together as a great team, just like a jigsaw does!

In Science and Geography, we completed a litter survey of the school grounds and created a block graph of the results.

2nd class read about “The Story of Chocolate” in their readers.  Of course, we had to make the krispie buns in the recipe at the end of the story.  We all enjoyed making and eating them!

Well done on all your hard work boys and girls!

Some sun & plenty of fun in 5th & 6th Class!

Wow! What a busy and fun few weeks we’ve had in the Senior Room. We went on our annual school tour to Dunmore East Adventure Centre and a great time was had by all!

That’s 13 meters high!

We looked in detail at the Irish coast in Geography, labelling islands and headlands and in Science we studied various sea creatures found in Irish waters.

Also in Geography we learned lots about China and created these maps surrounded by pictures and factual information about this interesting country.

We also learned lots about food chains in Science and created our own food chains as well as filling in some information sheets based on this topic.

Continuing on the aquatic theme we read about the platypus in English and drew and labelled this fascinating animal which seems to be a mixture of lots of different creatures!

We read about the Conger Eel too and created Encyclopedia Pages based on this sea creature.

In Art we also took inspiration from the sea to create tropical fish scenes and colourful sun catchers.

We also used our knowledge of lines to create colourful spiral designs and drew suns using straight and curved lines.

With Summer in mind we created bright, colourful butterflies in flight.

Capacity and Co-Ordinates are two of the topics we’ve learned about in Maths recently. 5th Class labelled capacity containers and 6th Class drew pictures from co-ordinates.

In SPHE we learned all about Road Safety and designed these posters based on this important subject.

During the month of May, the Junior Classroom have worked very hard in all areas of the curriculum. Following the Easter Break, they drew a picture of some activities they did during their holidays!

We welcomed 6 little chicks into the world during the month too! Every day, we watched them grow and at the end of the month, the children in the Junior Classroom named 2 of the chicks: Cookie & Bubbles!!!

In Maths, the children revisited the topic of Data and enjoyed tasting apples and recording the results from the class on a giant bar chart.

The results we graphed were that the Pink Lady Apple was the preferred apple while Royal Gala was the least favourite!

In SESE, the children enjoyed learning about Healthy Eating. They wrote their own Healthy Shopping List and also made some delicious fruit and vegetable bowls using stencils in Art.

In Geography, the children discussed the seasons of the year and in particular focused on Summer! In support of all their work on the topic, they designed their own “Flip Flops” to get us into the holiday mode!

First Class wrote their own Limericks during the month too!

They also created their own colourful characters!

Towards the end of the month, the children made their own cartoon creatures in SPHE who can really show their true qualities!

Well done on a great month’s work!

We’re looking forward to all the activities that June will bring!

Well done to everyone 🙂

In preparation for our Annual Book Fair, the school welcomed local author Martin Brennan and enjoyed learning about his stories as well as how to write a book from start to finish!

The children also designed their own book covers of their favourite stories as an extra activity to celebrate Book Week!

Over the past number of weeks, the children have thoroughly enjoyed participating in basketball lessons with Joe Byrne. A big thank you to Joe for all his enthusiasm each week and for teaching us new skills in basketball 🙂

First Class participated in a local Anti-Bullying Poster Competition and drew very meaningful pictures to discourage bullying in schools.

In SPHE, the children enjoyed talking about what makes their families special. In support of this, the children drew pictures to demonstrate what they treasure in their lives.

In Geography, the children explored the topic of jobs people do. The children enjoyed learning about different jobs and they also drew pictures of what they might like to be in the future!

March would not be March without all the preparations for St. Patrick’s Day! In Art, the children made their own Colourful Crocks of Gold!

First Class also enjoyed making their own shamrock badges as an extra work activity 🙂

In Maths, the children played a dice game in pairs called “St Patrick’s Day Roll and Cover”

The children went on a Spring Nature Walk in the Discovery Park to identify the physical features of Spring! They also enjoyed a short visit to the playground 🙂

In Art, they constructed their own Daffodil Pictures which has brought a little bit of Spring into our classroom! 🙂

During the month, we also celebrated Mothering Sunday! The children made their own beautiful bouquets to say thank you 🙂

Finally, towards the Easter Holidays, the children have been actively engaged in all sorts of Easter activities! They designed their own picture on the theme “Bible Leaders” for the Annual Bishop’s Poster Competition

They entered a local Easter Colouring Competition in Eurospar

and they made their own Easter Chicks to start the celebrations!

Well done on all your hard work over the past number of weeks. Happy Easter!
