We were delighted to get back into the classroom for the month of March and we’ve been busy completing lots of work for the month. For Mother’s Day we made fingerprint poems for our mums.

We celebrated St Patrick’s Day by making Leprechauns and we also practiced our cutting skills by snipping out some St Patrick’s Day pictures.

In SESE we learned the story of The Ugly Duckling. We drew pictures of where the story took place, who was in it and what happened.

Also in SESE we had fun learning about the season of Spring. We went on a nature walk to the river and spotted some signs of Spring, buds on the trees, birds collecting twigs for nests and primroses growing in the woods.

We drew pictures from our walk of what we saw, heard, smelled and our favourite part of the walk.

We are hoping to have lots of colour in our school grounds by summer as we planted sunflower seeds!

In Music we listened to and learned about Irish musical instruments including the tin whistle, Uilleann Pipes and fiddle. We listened to reels and jigs and discussed how fast the music was.

Finally in Art we made Spring Chicks which look lovely and bright on our classroom wall.

A warm welcome back to all our pupils after a stressful few months at home! It is great to be back in the classroom and it is even better seeing our friends that we haven’t seen in so long! The children have worked very hard since their return. Have a look at what they have been up to over the past few weeks!!

In History, we have been learning all about the Vikings. We learned where they came from, what they wore, how they lived and their life in Ireland. The children drew “Viking Longships” as you can see below!

To celebrate Mothering Sunday, we made these 3D Tulips. We also made cards. We hope all Mums, Grandmothers and Aunts had a wonderful day!

In English, we discussed Spring, new life, flowers, nature. We wrote about this lovely season and drew pictures of the things that happen in Spring!

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on 17th March, we all dressed up in green!

In Gaeilge, we have been learning all about “Éadaí” so we labelled our “Leipreachán” with all the words from the theme of “Éadaí” that we now know!

We made very cool looking Leprechauns using tissue paper and lots of imagination!

Ms. Delaney has also been teaching the pupils over the past week and a half and the children have been learning all about magnets and the weather. They completed some prediction activities in Science to see what items were magnetic and non-magnetic.

In Visual Arts the children drew “Self-Portraits”…

The children learned about “The Easter Story” and in Visual Arts, made these fantastic Easter Chicks!

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter!

Merry Christmas from the Junior Room!

December has been as busy as ever in the Junior Room! Check out what we’ve been up to below.

In Art we made Nativity silhouettes and Christmas Tree Snowglobes. We used shaving foam to create puffy paint for the snow!

In SESE we learned all about the topic of Winter. We watched a video about Polar Bears and labelled them and we discovered information about animals which live in the North and South Poles and located the North and South Poles on a globe.

We learned about the explorer Tom Crean and why it is important to look after and feed garden birds in Winter.

We also heard the story of The Spider and the Christmas Tree. It tells the story of a poor family who have no decorations for their tree but when they wake on Christmas morning spiders have built webs in the tree which glisten in the light! We made our own glistening trees like the family had.

In RE we learned the story of the first Christmas when Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

This month in Maths Junior Infants were playing games about numbers 1-5 which they learned this term and Senior Infants learned positional language using words like beside, on, over and between. They drew Rudolph flying using these words so he was in the correct place.

Junior Infants were also learning new letter sounds, including l.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year from everyone in the Junior Room!

Wonderful Work in the Senior Room this Winter!

November and December have been busy months once again for us all here at Wandesforde. 5th & 6th Class have been working so hard in all subject areas.

In Religion, the children designed a front cover for the Gazette Magazine Front Cover Competition

The children engaged in a Biodiversity Workshop with Michele Castiaux through the Heritage in Schools Schemes and created their own Biodiversity Maps of our school environment. They did a fantastic job and learned so much!

They also engaged in a History Workshop on Anglo Norman Castles with Lisanne O’ Loughlin and Steve Mandal . They learned so much about Kilkenny Castle and constructed their own model of Kilkenny Castle in response to all they had learned.

In Maths, the children covered many topics including Lines and Angles. They designed their own Stained Glass Windows using a variety of lines and angles.

During November and December, the children explored various forms of poetry in English. They created their own Haiku Poetry, which is a Japanese poem consisting of 3 short lines.

They also did Diamante Poetry in December. These are diamond shaped poems which are made up of seven lines using various parts of speech.

The children have been reading the class novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlan McKenna which explores the theme of the Irish Potato Famine. The children learned lots of interesting facts about the Famine whilst reading this novel.

In SPHE, the class engaged very well in activities relating to the topic of Friendship. As a whole class activity, we established that the 3 most important qualities of a friend for us all are: Optimism, Thoughtfulness and Loyalty.

They also came up with their own Healthy Friendship Statements and drew illustrations to depict these statements!

In Gaeilge, the children continued to learn lots of new vocabulary and phrases. They created their own illustrations of many phrases they had learned. In advance of the “Seó Bréagán” le Ryan Tubridy, the children designed their own “Geansaí Nollag” Rinne siad jab iontach!

The Digestive System was also explored in Science. Did you know that your body can move your food through your digestive system even while you are standing on your head?! It is not connected to gravity and it happens because of the muscles in your digestive system!!

In Art, we sketched owls using chalk and chalk pastels.

In preparation for Christmas, the children designed their own Christmas card,

A Winter Wonderland Scene….

and Clay Christmas Trees.

We also created our own Class Cookbook as a gift for our families. We hope you enjoy the many tasty treats inside!

Finally, we produced our own Class Calendar for 2021 for our teachers and our homes!

As always, well done and thank you to 5th & 6th Class for all your hard work. This has been a very busy and different term for us all and we have worked so hard together. Enjoy your well deserved Christmas Break and I look forward to hearing all your news and seeing all your wonderful work with Ms. Róisín Nolan in 2021! 🙂

November has flown by in the Junior Room and once again we have been busy learning lots of new things across the curriculum!

At the start of the month we had a virtual visit from Marina Levitina through the Heritage in Schools Scheme. She taught us lots of information about native Irish plants and flowers and we did an art lesson with her where she showed us how to draw a Meadow Sweet flower.

In SESE and Music this month we learned all about musical instruments from around the world, including the tin whistle from Ireland, castanets from Spain, bagpipes from Scotland, drums from Africa and the digeridoo from Australia! We listened to all these instruments and then played some percussion instruments in Music class.

We also listened to some classical music by Mozart and learned some facts about him.

In Gaeilge we learned all about Bia this month and made our own Bosca Lón with ceapairí, bainne, uisce, banana, úll, iógart agus piorra!

Finally in Maths we were learning about 2D shapes and made these shape monsters with Ms Delaney who was with us on Teaching Practice for the month.
