Class Work

We have lovely bright classrooms and we regularly display the children’s work for parents and visitors to look at. As you can see from the blog posts, we are a busy school, learning lots of new and exciting things every day.

Spooktacular goings on in the Junior Room!

October has been another busy month in our room. We visited Castlecomer Library and heard authors Sinéad Dore and Claire Keating reading from their book Bea’s Ocean Commotion. We did some fun activities with them to help us if we feel worried too.

In English Junior Infants are busy learning lots of letter sounds and Senior Infants are learning new Tricky Words all the time. Juniors had fun playing games to revise their sounds.

Our Art this month included painting and cutting Autumn leaves as well as sponge painting to make bat silhouettes.

We were delighted to welcome Heritage in Schools Artist Orla Bates to Wandesforde. Orla discussed the topic of Autumn with us, going outside to look at all the colourful Autumn leaves before we created Autumn Leaf Clay Pots!

In SESE we learned all about the season of Autumn. We discovered the farmer is really busy at this time of year harvesting corn, ploughing fields and picking appples and pumpkins. We sequenced the story of The Little Red Hen and learned all about bats in the run up to Halloween!

We learned all about colours, we mixed primary colours to find out what secondary colours we can make and recorded our results on these colour wheels.

Our Play topic this month was Autumn and Halloween. We made items in Junk Art and Play Doh, we created woodlands in Small World, we built spooky houses and castles in Construction and we had fun finding things related to the topic in the sand.

Making hedgehogs in Junk Art
Making a combine for the farmers in Autumn in Junk Art
Using Play Doh to make pumpkins
Making spiders
Creating bats!
Creating Autumn woodlands in Small World
Building a Haunted House in Construction
Creating a witch’s house in the sand

In PE we were practicing skills in playing different games, focusing on running and ball skills.

Before the Halloween holidays we made some tasty Halloween rice krispie pumpkin treats and dressed up in our Halloween costumes! Happy Halloween to all, have a lovely break 🙂

It has been such a busy term in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class and the boys and girls have settled in really well to their new classes! Have a look at what we have been up to!

In English, we wrote about and drew pictures of our Summer holidays and what we got up to!

We painted pictures to show our artistic abilities!

In SPHE we drew pictures to show how we are special and unique…

We also designed our own family crests!

We decorated our initials with lots of different embellishments!

In Geography we looked at and discussed houses, homes and the various parts of a house…

In Visual Arts, we made “Birds of Peacefulness”…aren’t they so colourful?

We also had fun putting masking tape on paper, painting over it and then taking it off, very carefully!

We looked at the topic of Autumn and wrote about the signs of Autumn all around us. We also went on a nature walk around the school grounds to spot the signs that we discussed….

The children were excited to have a workshop with Órla Bates on 14th October and they were delighted with the Clay Leaf Bowls that they made…They also enjoyed playing some games, using nature in our school grounds….

#

To mark Jersey Day and to raise money for the charity “Goal”, we dressed up in our favourite sports’ clothes…

We learned about owls…Did you know an owl can turn its head 270 degrees?!!!

We discussed the theme of Halloween and made these “Spooky Bats”….

We made spooky pumpkin treats and all helped out with Mrs. Dooley!

Happy Halloween everybody! Enjoy your midterm break!

A New Year in the Junior Room

Date posted: 5th October 2022 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, History, Junior Classroom, Mathematics, Our Work on Display, Religious Education, SPHE, Visual Arts |

September has been a fun and busy month in the Junior Room, we worked on various skills like cutting and drawing, going outside to practice some of these.

We discussed our Class Rules and coloured pictures of them.

We were learning all about ourselves and how we are growing up in SESE.

We discussed the many different people who make up our families and drew family portraits.

Senior Infants are continuing to learn Tricky Words, we went out to practice some of them with chalk. They were also busy working on matching skills in Maths and went on a hunt around the classroom for objects that go together such as paper & crayons, teapot & cup, doll & pram etc.

In art we drew pictures of our summer holidays and painted bright backgrounds to go with self portraits we created.

Finally in RE we learned our School Prayer and made pictures thanking God for school.

Summer Fun in the Junior Room

Date posted: 27th June 2022 | Category Blog, Class Work, Drama, English, Geography, Junior Classroom, Local Visits, Music, Our Work on Display, Science, SPHE, Sport, Visual Arts |

The last few weeks in school have been full of learning and activities in the Junior room. We learned all about the Garden Centre in Play.

Role playing in The Garden Centre
Making Play Doh flowers – Lilacs
Roses and Morning Glory
Gladioli
Building Patio Furniture to sell in the Garden Centre
Building A Garden Centre in Small World

In SESE we learned all about the country of Italy, we discussed landmarks, food and where Italy is located. We also learned about fish, things we do at the seaside, the season of Summer and starfish.

We also made butter from cream. We shook the bottle for a few minutes and slowly but surely it turned into butter!

In Art we made sunflowers using tea leaves to create the centre of them and ice cream cones for Summer from puffy paint.

To tie in with the Garden Centre we also sowed some sunflowers for our own gardens.

To celebrate the season of Summer we had a Teddy Bears Picnic with ice-cream and strawberries and played some outdoor water activities and games.

In SPHE we learned all about road safety and practiced crossing the road safely at the Pelican Crossing in town and outside our school.

In English we continued to learn our Tricky Words and in Music listened to the song “Under the Sea” and drew pictures in response to it.

Wishing everyone a fun and happy Summer and see you at the end of August!
