September Fun in 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!

Date posted: 3rd October 2012 | Category Blog, English, Geography, Middle Classroom, SPHE, Visual Arts |

A warm welcome back to everyone from 1st, 2nd and 3rd class pupils!  We have had a very busy month and from the following photos, you can see what we have been up to!

We wrote all about our Summer Holidays, what we did, who we saw and where we went…

The children then drew pictures of their happy Summer memories for all to see…

In Geography, we learned all about the various types of houses people all over the world lived in.  We discussed the materials used in some houses.  After looking at some pictures of mud houses and ice houses, we came to the conclusion that we are very lucky to have warm, comfortable homes to live in.. We did get the chance, however, to draw our dream houses!  There are lots of mansions with swimming pools, slides and so much more!

In SPHE, we discussed and worked in groups to devise 5 tips for a healthy lifestyle.  The children then collaborated all the tips onto posters for all to see….

Here is all their work on display….

June in the Senior Classroom!

Date posted: 26th June 2012 | Category Blog, History, Senior Classroom, SPHE, Visual Arts |

June has been a very busy month in Wandesforde NS. We’ve had our annual Sports’ Day and Awards Assembly as well as an end of year service in St Mary’s church. The senior classes have been looking at the Olympics which take place in London this summer. We worked in groups looking at different aspects of the games such as history, location, events and Irish competitors.

In art we created these beautiful cherry blossom trees using tissue paper and glitter.

In history each pupil picked their hero from the past. People they picked included J.F.K., Neil Armstrong, Tom Creane and Martin Luther King. Here are their heroes!

In SPHE we worked in groups to create these lovely pictures.

We also discussed how we are influenced in different ways, by different people. Here we filled in the petals of the flowers showing the people who influence us.

Finally it was time to say goodbye to our 6th class. We had a lovely end of year service in the church where the boys were presented with a Bible and Certificate to mark their time in Wandesforde NS. We wish them all the best in the future.

We wish everybody an enjoyable and relaxing summer break!

The month of June is always a very busy time for all classes between Class Tests, the Sponsored Cycle, Sports’ Day and of course finishing off our workbooks!!

The Junior Classroom did have some time to do extra fun activities!

Take a look below!

There was weaving of course!

In Drama, the children enjoyed “The Game of Mirrors” whereby they had to copy the movements made by their partner!

They drew fantastic pictures of the School’s Sponsored Cycle!

They designed and of course modelled their Father’s Day Ties!!

The children also learned about Sun Safety in SPHE and made their own Summer Booklets too!!

They made jelly together!

On one of the few sunny days in June, the children and Ms, Wilson enjoyed eating an ice-lolly together outside to mark the end of their time together in the Junior Classroom!

Thank you to all the children in the Junior Classroom for their continued hard work, enthusiasm and of course smiling faces this year 🙂

Enjoy your Summer Holidays!!

Smoothies!

Date posted: 11th June 2012 | Category Blog, Middle Classroom, Science, SPHE |

To celebrate National Strawberry Week, the children in 2nd & 3rd Class made smoothies!  We talked about various fruits that people eat as part of their 5 a day!  The children then got to choose their fruit and make their own smoothies!

The ingredients provided were mango, bananas, pineapple and of course strawberries!  We mixed the fruit with some natural yoghurt and some orange juice and then blended it altogether to make our smoothies.  While the children were waiting to make their smoothies, they created their own recipe book, full of delicious combinations of fruit, so they can try them at home with their mums or dads!

Here are some photos of the children making the smoothies and of course, enjoying the finished product.  Yum!

A visit to the Fire Station!

Date posted: 11th May 2012 | Category Blog, Class Work, Local Visits, Middle Classroom, SPHE |

The children in 2nd and 3rd Class along with teachers Ms.O Brien, Mrs. Dooley, Ms. Cobbe and myself went to visit the local fire station on Thursday 3rd May to learn more about the work of a station and the firefighters who work there.  It was a fantastic trip, both for children and teachers and we learned so much.

Willie and Philip greeted us and the first thing to do was have a brief chat in the meeting room…

The children saw the area where the firefighters had to get changed into their gear.  Philip told us that they can get their fireproof gear on in less than 2 minutes…The children were allowed to lift the gear and it was pretty heavy!  They have to wear gloves, special trousers, a jacket, steel toe boots, a hoody that ensures their ears are protected and a helmet.  They then have to face a fire, which of course is very hot, wearing all this gear!

We also got a chance to see the equipment that is in a fire engine.  They had saws, brushes, hoses, generators, ladders, air tanks and so many other things!

The children got the opportunity to see how the firefighters saw through a car if they need to.  We had to stand back as they demonstrated this…

The most enjoyable part was sitting in the fire engine.  Here are some nice photos…..

Philip, Willie and the team do a wonderful job serving the local community. We had a great day!
