A visit to the Fire Station!

The children in 2nd and 3rd Class along with teachers Ms.O Brien, Mrs. Dooley, Ms. Cobbe and myself went to visit the local fire station on Thursday 3rd May to learn more about the work of a station and the firefighters who work there.  It was a fantastic trip, both for children and teachers and we learned so much.

Willie and Philip greeted us and the first thing to do was have a brief chat in the meeting room…

The children saw the area where the firefighters had to get changed into their gear.  Philip told us that they can get their fireproof gear on in less than 2 minutes…The children were allowed to lift the gear and it was pretty heavy!  They have to wear gloves, special trousers, a jacket, steel toe boots, a hoody that ensures their ears are protected and a helmet.  They then have to face a fire, which of course is very hot, wearing all this gear!

We also got a chance to see the equipment that is in a fire engine.  They had saws, brushes, hoses, generators, ladders, air tanks and so many other things!

The children got the opportunity to see how the firefighters saw through a car if they need to.  We had to stand back as they demonstrated this…

The most enjoyable part was sitting in the fire engine.  Here are some nice photos…..

Philip, Willie and the team do a wonderful job serving the local community. We had a great day!

Firefighters Visit Wandesforde NS!

Date posted: 20th April 2012 | Category Blog, Middle Classroom, SPHE |

On Friday, 20th April 2012, firefighters from Kilkenny Fire Service visited the pupils in 2nd and 3rd Class, as part of the SPHE curriculum in conjunction with local Fire Stations.  3 officers, Philip, Richie and Willie spoke to the pupils about fire safety in the home.  The children had to complete a worksheet where they had to identify hazards in the home.  The officers also spoke about smoke alarms, calling emergency services and also what to do if they were in a dangerous situation.  We have planned a trip to the local fire station on 3rd May and the children are really looking forward to seeing how the station operates!  Here are some photos…

Thank you to Philip, Willie and Richie for visiting us in school!

February has been Fun in the Junior Room!

We remembered St. Brigid’s Day at the start of February and the children had great fun designing St. Brigid’s Cloak using coloured mosaics!

In SESE, the children have been learning about Water. We had great fun learning about the Water Cycle and we learned a poem called “Splish Splosh” The children drew lovely pictures to illustrate this poem. Take a look at their drawings below!

The children in First Class wrote a character description of the characters in the fairytale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”

In Gaeilge, the children learned all about “An Teilifís” and drew their favourite television programme or cartoon!

In SPHE, the children learned all about  our emotions and as an art activity they designed a paper plate puppet which has a two sided face displaying two different emotions. Look at their emotional puppets!

In English, the children have been busy learning their February “WOW” words which is part of the school’s strategy in further developing literacy in our school!

The children also listened to the story of Elmer the Elephant and they designed their own patterned coat for Elmer using rolled up crepe paper too!

Well done to the Junior Room on all your lovely work this February!!

2nd & 3rd Class Read “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes”

Date posted: 5th December 2011 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, History, Middle Classroom, Our Work on Display, Science, SPHE, Visual Arts |

The children in 2nd and 3rd class read a book called “Brush – A Tale of 2 Foxes” over the past few weeks.  It was written by Pierce Feiritear and illustrated by a 14 year-old boy called Conor O’ Brien.  It’s a story about 2 young foxes, Misty and Ash, who try to help feed their family during the cold Winter months and get up to all sorts of mischief on the way!  We really enjoyed reading the book and the children completed a book review and scored the book out of ten.

2nd and 3rd class pupils love writing stories.  In English, 3rd class wrote wonderful stories about animals!  They used great adjectives and verbs when writing their stories!

In SPHE, we completed a lesson called “Flower Power”.  We discussed our possibilities and strengths and recorded them on petals on flowers.  Some boys and girls are really good at soccer, others are really good at being a friend and sharing.  Our flowers are now on display in the classroom on our SPHE wall.

In SESE, we learned all about volcanoes, how they work and lots of facts about them.  We integrated the SESE lesson with Visual Arts and completed “Exploding Volcanoes” with lava, rocks and fire exploding from the craters.  Have a look at our work!

In History, we learned all about Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1621 in America.  Turkeys are eaten at Thanksgiving, just as we eat them for Christmas in Ireland.  We used our handprints to make “Thanksgiving Turkeys” in Art!
