Physical Education

Physical Education is taught by the class teacher for 1 hour each week. The children are very fortunate to have other coaches and experts visit the school to teach soccer and basketball. We also attend swimming for a period of 8-10 weeks in the Summer term.

The Junior Classroom have once again been busy doing new activities this month!

During the month, we celebrated Valentine’s Day. The children made their own handprint photo frame as a gift for their parents.

The children also had fun making their own chocolate hearts as a little treat for their loved ones too!

We melted both milk and white chocolate in the microwave. Mmmm!

We poured the melted chocolate into heart shaped moulds!

The moulds were then put in the fridge to set 🙂

Finally our very own chocolate hearts were ready for packaging!!

The children brought their handmade chocolates home in their Valentine Treat Boxes 😉 We hope you enjoyed them!!

In Art, the children drew their own picture for the Annual Texaco Drawing Competition. Here is just a glimpse of some of their very colourful entries!

Good Luck Everybody!

As part of a Whole School Art Competition, the class drew a picture showing ways to save water for the Green Flag Committee!

Didn’t they do a great job!

Finally, after all their hard work, they did have time to learn new skills and play Uni Hoc with Ms. Wilson!

Great work once again Junior & Senior Infants!

Food Dudes & FitKids!

Date posted: 26th October 2013 | Category Blog, Class Work, Junior Classroom, Middle Classroom, Physical Education, Senior Classroom, SPHE, Sport |

Over the next few weeks, the children in Wandesforde NS will be taking part in 2 programmes to promote heathy eating and healthy living!  The first is the Food Dudes programme, run in conjunction with An Bord Bia.  The aim of the programme is to promote fruit and vegetable consumption in Irish Schools.  We are very fortunate to take part in this programme and on the 6th November, the children will receive a portion of fruit and vegetables each day for 16 consecutive days.  To encourage and reward the children for their efforts, each child will receive a prize for tasting and eating the fruit and vegetables.

The prizes vary from pencils to sports bottles and so many more great things!  We do not want to give away the surprise just yet!!  The children will also watch a dvd each day in class and receive letters from the Food Dudes encouraging them in taking part in this programme!

The second programme that the children will be taking part in is “FitKids”!  This is a 7 week workshop promoting an active lifestyle through lessons based on gymnastics and agility games.  The children will each receive 1 hour’s tuition from the FitKids team each week.  With all these fun activities, the children are really becoming fit and healthy!

A Super September in the Senior Room!

Date posted: 7th October 2013 | Category Blog, English, Physical Education, Senior Classroom, SPHE, Visual Arts |

September has been a busy and enjoyable month in the senior room. We have been learning lots of new and interesting things in all subjects.

In art we used oil pastels to colour our names, covered them in black paint and then etched interesting designs and patterns on them!

We also created these colourful Celtic designs.

In English we wrote autumn themed acrostic poems. Each class has a different word to use for their poem. We also went on an autumn nature walk in PE to the Discovery Park. 4th and 5th class had to spot different plants and 6th class went on a scavenger hunt!

In SPHE we looked at different forms of advertising. We looked in detail at print ads from magazines and answered questions about them and we also discussed television advertising and wrote about it.

Sports’ Day 2013!

Date posted: 20th June 2013 | Category Blog, Junior Classroom, Middle Classroom, Physical Education, Senior Classroom, Sports |

On Tuesday, 18th June, all the children participated in Sports’ Day.  From the word ‘go!’, the emphasis was on having fun and enjoying the whole day.  The first race was the sprints.  The Infants ran 20 metres, 1st and 2nd ran 30 metres and the senior pupils in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class ran 60 metres!

Next came the hurdles, with the same distance for all classes.  We have some talented athletes in this school!

Next we had the egg and spoon race….steady hands……

It was then time for a well-deserved ice cream!

After break, we had the sack race…

And finally, we had the 3-legged race….Some children ran it all, without falling…

Others had a little tumble….!

We finished off a lovely day by having our prize-giving in the GP room.  Each child received a medal for their wonderful efforts on Sports’ Day.

Well done to the following children who received trophies for their huge efforts on Sports’ Day as well as being super team players throughout the year.  Well done everybody….

Our Sponsored Cycle 2013!

Date posted: 12th June 2013 | Category Blog, Fundraising Activities, Junior Classroom, Middle Classroom, Physical Education, Senior Classroom, Special Occasions, Sport |

On Saturday, 8th June, the school held their annual sponsored cycle.  We were absolutely blessed with beautiful weather.  Cyclists started to arrive early and there was a great atmosphere around the school from the start to the finish.  As well as a fantastic spread of savoury and sweet food, the children were treated to ice-cream from the icicle bicycle, chips and lots more fun things.  There was also face-painting and games on the grass to keep everyone entertained.  Almost 200 adult cyclists participated in the event and we thank each and everyone for their support so far.  So far almost €5,900 has been raised but money is still coming in so we hope to pass the €6,000 mark!  A huge thank you to the Parents’ Association, staff, teachers and anyone who helped out by preparing food, serving food,  stewarding, cycling with the children, supervising, taking photographs and driving.  Without this help, the event would not be possible so thank you all very much!  Have a look at some lovely photos…..happy memories from a great day!
