Music

Music is taught by the class teacher. The children have the opportunity to learn the piano from 1st class onwards if they wish. Every second year, we have a group called the “Funky Kids Workshop” in our school to help us put on a wonderful show. Denis and Olivia from the Funky Kids group teach us songs, dances and we then perform them at a Christmas Show for parents and the school community. We also record the show on DVD for parents to purchase! Each week in Assembly, we sing a song and once a year, we attend a Children’s Choral Festival with the other schools in the Diocese.

We’ve started school!

September has been a busy month for us all as we settle back to school again!

The Junior Classroom  welcomed 7 Junior Infants who have settled in very well to life at “Big School!”

Our Senior Infants have settled very well into their new class too!

During the month, the children have had fun getting to know each other and also doing new things together!

In Art, the children designed their own Rainbow Fish in response to the story we read.

In support of Kilkenny competing in the All Ireland Hurling Final, the children designed their own Kilkenny cat!

Come on the Cats!!!

We have been learning many letters in English this month. For the letter “a” the children painted and cut out their own apple for our nice Autumn Display!

We used a cotton bud instead of a brush to paint the leaves on our apples! The children also enjoyed tasting Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady and Royal Gala apples

This year Ms. Wilson has chosen to name the groups in her classroom, Pirates and Princesses. The children designed their own masks for their group.

Can you figure out the pirates and princesses?

In S.E.S.E, the children have been learning lots of interesting facts about hedgehogs. Take a look at the clay hedgehogs the children made below!

Did you know that a baby hedgehog is called a hoglet and that hoglets are white when they are born?

In Music, the children have been learning many different nursery rhymes. They particularly enjoyed singing Humpty Dumpty so we made our own “Humpty Dumptys with Hairstyles!”

Towards the end of the month, the children enjoyed baking their own Chocolate Chip and Smartie Cookies. Everybody had a job to do on the day and the end result was very tasty indeed!!

We used butter…

brown sugar….

flour, baking powder and eggs….

vanilla essence…

and of course chocolate chips and smarties!!!

We made them into small balls and placed them in the oven!

We had to eat them up and hide them from the Cookie Monster!!

Well done to all the children on a great month’s work!

May Madness in the Middle Room!

Date posted: 23rd May 2014 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, History, Middle Classroom, Music, Our Work on Display, Visual Arts |

The school year is certainly flying by and May has been so busy, after returning from the Easter Break.  When we came back, the children put their wonderful painting skills to work and painted their happy memories from the Easter Holidays…

In Literacy, we wrote a report about the events that filled our break!

In Visual Arts, we focused on the strand of clay and the children had the opportunity to create coil pots and other wonderful creations.  Here is a before and after picture of their work!

In Music, we learned a song about a Beluga Whale and then created our own designs on Whales to brighten up the corridor and classroom!

In History and English, we looked at the Book of Kells which is kept in Trinity College, Dublin.  We looked at examples of pages in the book, the art and work that went into it and then we coloured in pages from the Book of Kells and displayed them!

Well done boys and girls on a great month’s work!

Another month is nearly over and once again the Junior Classroom have been busy little bees!!

In Art, the children had fun rolling up crepe paper into balls to create their very own Cherry Blossom. Did you know that the Cherry Blossom originally came from Japan?

As part of the Maths Curriculum, the children played their own Numbers Game called “Daffodil Drive” in pairs.

In Music, the children drew pictures in response to “Dance of the Flowers” by Tchaikovsky.

We have some budding artists in the Junior Room as you can see from their detailed drawings 🙂

We also have been learning how to play basketball with Joe Byrne. Thank You Joe for all the fun, skills and games each week. The children really enjoyed it!

In R.E. the children drew their own pictures for the Bishop’s Poster Competition based on the theme of “Bringing Hope”

In celebration of Easter, the children designed their own polystyrene eggs and …..

they also made their own cute & colourful Easter Chicks!

Finally as an end of term treat, the children welcomed a new member, Sally, into their school for the day!

The children really enjoyed  petting the baby lamb.

Thank you to Derry and Jackie Neale for giving the children the opportunity to meet & greet Sally!!

Well done to all the children again for all their enthusiasm and hard work this month. Enjoy the well deserved Easter Break everyone and I’ll see you all in the Summer Term!!

April Activities in the Middle Room!

Date posted: 11th April 2014 | Category Blog, Class Work, Easter, English, Middle Classroom, Music, Visual Arts |

It has certainly been a busy April and now that Easter is almost here, we have been extra busy with lots of fun and games in the middle room!  Have a look at what we have been up to….

In Science, the children have been focusing on Electricity and Magnetism.  The 1st and 2nd Class children had opportunities to explore if magnets worked through various materials!  The 3rd Class had the challenge of building simple circuits and also making buzzers work using a simple circuit….

In Visula Arts and Music, we read the story of “The Willow Pattern”, a story about 2 young Chinese people who fell in love and were turned into doves.  The children designed their own Willow Pattern plates.  Do you have some Willow Pattern in your house?  Have a look at the design on the plate if you do and see if you can spot the doves in the sky!

We also made some Easter treats to take home…

As an Easter craft activity, we made Easter Chicks using wool.  They certainly are very bright chicks!

The children also designed their own, unique Easter eggs which are still displayed on the wall of our clasroom…

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter from the boys and girls in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!
