Music

Music is taught by the class teacher. The children have the opportunity to learn the piano from 1st class onwards if they wish. Every second year, we have a group called the “Funky Kids Workshop” in our school to help us put on a wonderful show. Denis and Olivia from the Funky Kids group teach us songs, dances and we then perform them at a Christmas Show for parents and the school community. We also record the show on DVD for parents to purchase! Each week in Assembly, we sing a song and once a year, we attend a Children’s Choral Festival with the other schools in the Diocese.

It has certainly been a busy April and now that Easter is almost here, we have been extra busy with lots of fun and games in the middle room!  Have a look at what we have been up to….

In Science, the children have been focusing on Electricity and Magnetism.  The 1st and 2nd Class children had opportunities to explore if magnets worked through various materials!  The 3rd Class had the challenge of building simple circuits and also making buzzers work using a simple circuit….

In Visula Arts and Music, we read the story of “The Willow Pattern”, a story about 2 young Chinese people who fell in love and were turned into doves.  The children designed their own Willow Pattern plates.  Do you have some Willow Pattern in your house?  Have a look at the design on the plate if you do and see if you can spot the doves in the sky!

We also made some Easter treats to take home…

As an Easter craft activity, we made Easter Chicks using wool.  They certainly are very bright chicks!

The children also designed their own, unique Easter eggs which are still displayed on the wall of our clasroom…

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter from the boys and girls in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!

Date posted: 1st November 2013 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, Geography, Hallow'een, History, Junior Classroom, Music, Science, Visual Arts |

Another month has come and gone and once again the Junior Classroom have been hard at work!

In English, we learned a lot of new letters. We made our very own Paper Plate Indians for the letter “i”.

and Colourful Cupcakes for the letter “c”

In History, the children learned about the Aboriginal Culture and painted Australian Animals using cotton buds!!

We studied the season of Autumn and made some “Autumnal Trees” in Science.

The children listened to the musical piece “The Aquarium” by Camille Saint Saens and responded to it by drawing a picture representing the music.

In Gaeilge, we enjoyed learning Halloween words through games and rhymes. We particularly enjoyed learning the rhyme “Oíche Shamhna is Bairín Breac”. Of course we had to sample some barn brack just to appreciate the rhyme!!

We also has a Halloween Dress Up Day in school. The children really enjoyed showing off their fantastic costumes to all their friends in school 🙂

The children also made their own clay spiders and egg carton bats in Art.

Welcome back from 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!

Welcome back everybody from 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!  We have all settled in very well to our work since the 27th August.  Have a look at what we have been up to over the past 3 weeks!

In RE, we have discussed the theme of “Belonging”.  To show that we are part of God’s family, we each handprinted leaves on a large tree and wrote our names in marker.  We also read a poem about belonging to various “families”, in school, at home and in other aspects of our lives.

In Science we have been learning about Volcanoes.  We created our own volcanoes using lots of different materials, such as cotton wool, glue and paint.  We then used the end of a paintbrush to create the lava exploding from the crater.  In Music we learned a song about a volcano called “Popocatepetl”.  We had great fun re-creating the explosive sounds a volcano makes using body percussion…

In English, we wrote about the fun and activities we got up to over the Summer break.  The children also drew super pictures highlighting their favourite part of the holidays…

In History, 1st and 2nd Class have been learning about their families and they had to design a crest to depict what was important in their family’s life.  Some families enjoy sport, some cooking, some farming and some the outdoor life.  Have a look at their great designs…

In Art we discussed colours that work well together and colours that clash.  The children had to colour in Jolly Jesters.  This took a bit of time and effort as there was a pattern to follow in each part of the jester.  Don’t they look really well on the wall?

And finally, we got to pick our potatoes!  We had a really good crop this year.  The senior classes very kindly cut the potatoes and we had delicious wedges for our lunch.  They were yummy!

April Arrives in the Senior Room!

Date posted: 3rd May 2013 | Category Blog, English, Music, Science, Senior Classroom, Visual Arts |

April has been another busy month for the pupils of 4th, 5th and 6th class.

In science we looked at the earthworm and found out lots of information about it. We then made our own wormery! We made layers of sand and soil and put 4 worms in it. After a week we could see the worms had mixed up the sand and soil and created tunnels through the soil and sand.

In music we listened to a song called Ripples in the Rockpool and drew these pictures.

In art we drew and painted a daffodil from observation.

We also made seaside themed window pictures. Here are some of them on display!

We also finished reading our novel Holes, which everyone enjoyed. Before we read the final few chapters we drew these magic ball predictions showing how we thought the story would end!
