October has been a busy month in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class in Wandesforde National School!  We have been focusing on the theme of Autumn and as part of this activity, we made Autumn books.  In these books are lots of activities such as Wordsearches, Art, Stories and an Autumn Trail!

In Art, we made collages of “Autumn Owls sitting on their Branches”…

We also made “Hibernating Hedgehogs” and used a special technique with our paintbrushes to create their spikes!

In Maths, 1st and 2nd Class pupils are learning about 2d shapes.  They had to create pictures using only 2d shapes.  Look at their wonderful pictures.  There are animals, warriors, houses, machines and lots more…

In 2nd Class, the children had to follow the instructions to make a banana milkshake.  They had great fun mixing, chopping and of course tasting!  The whole class got to taste the finished product!

Cheers!

A different kind of Maths Lesson!

During the month of March, 3rd class children were learning about weight and capacity in their Maths lesson.  On one of the pages, there were questions based on “Emma’s Kitchen” and part of the activity included following a recipe to make Queen Cakes, so that’s exactly what we did!

The children weighed out the ingredients using a scale, mixed it up and put the mixture into bun cases…

Of course, the 2nd class helped to eat the finished product, along with the 3rd class!

Maths Trail in the Junior Classroom!

Date posted: 3rd March 2012 | Category Blog, Junior Classroom, Mathematics |

On Wednesday, 29th February, the Junior Room did a Maths Trail on car registration numbers parked inside and outside the school grounds.

The children worked in pairs to identify the year, county and registration numbers of 10 cars.

After much investigating, we discovered that there were more “KK” car registrations parked outside than any other registrations.  We also saw a Longford (L) registration plate as well as a Wicklow (WW) registration plate which we hadn’t expected to find!

The children worked so well together and had great fun predicting, investigating and recording numbers in our school environment!

Well done Junior Room!

November has been busy in the Junior Classroom!

The Junior Room experimented with papier mache this November and made our own homemade maracas out of yoghurt cartons. Have a look at all the hard work we did with paper and wallpaper paste!!

Here are our painted maracas in action!

In Maths, we made a Class Calendar for the Junior Classroom. Each child was given a month to draw a picture on and then we marked all our birthdays in on our very own calendar! It was great fun to do and the end result looks fantastic! Here are some photographs of the calendar for the next 2 months!

The children also learned about Healthy Eating in SESE. We decorated our own fruit and vegetables using pieces of magazines. We learned lots of interesting facts about Fruit and Vegetables too. Did you know that tomatoes and peppers are actually fruit and not vegetables!!

We also integrated Maths into our work on Fruit & Vegetables. We made our own Bar Charts displaying the preferred fruit & vegetables of the children in our classroom! Here are the results: carrots are the favourite vegetable and apples and grapes are the favourite fruit!!

In art, we looked at Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “A Starry Night” and we learned some interesting facts about his work. The children really enjoyed using new metallic colouring pencils to colour their own drawing of his painting on black sugar paper. Have a look at the children’s fantastic drawings!

The children also learned lots of new letters and words in English. The letter “p” inspired us all to make our own mini pizzas. We chose fruit & vegetables to put on our own pizzas and of course we had great fun eating them!

As it’s the first month of Winter, the children had to get started on something cool in SESE!!We learned about the history & culture of the Inuit People and so we designed our own parka for an eskimo!
