Although February is the shortest month of the year, the Junior Classroom managed to get lots of work done in all subject areas! St. Brigid’s Day started off the month for us and the children listened to stories about St. Brigid and also coloured in their own St. Brigid’s Cross.

In SESE, the children have been working on the theme of water and in response to all they have learned, the children made their own Water Scene on  paper plates!

The children explored the topic of “Feelings” in SPHE. They used a technique called “Taking a Line for a Walk” to design their own hearts and show how they feel inside using a colour key code. There’s a lot of yellow on their hearts which tells us they are happy children!!

In Art, the children participated in the Annual Texaco Competition. Below are photographs of their entries. Didn’t they do a wonderful job!

February would not be February without Valentine’s Day! The children listened to the story of St.Valentine in History and then made their own Valentine Character and Card for their loved ones!

During the month, the children took part in the Operation Transformation Initiative “10@10” whereby they actively engaged in a physical activity for 10 minutes at 10 o’ clock on a Friday morning. This was greatly enjoyed by all and the children look forward to continuing this workout in the coming months!!

Finally in Maths, the children have been working very hard on the topic of Money. They have been working out what coins they would need to buy items in our classroom shop display. They also enjoyed doing coin rubbings as an art activity in Maths!

Well done on a great month’s work! 🙂

We’re back and ready for 2017!

Date posted: 20th February 2017 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, History, Middle Classroom, Visual Arts |

A warm welcome back to everyone from 2nd, 3rd and 4th Class!  We have had a busy January and February so far!  To start off the new year, we wrote about what we did over the Christmas holidays and discussed our new year’s resolutions…

In English, the 4th class boys were reading a recipe about “Peppermint Creams”.  We had a go at making these very simple, but delicious,  sweets!  Everyone tried one and agreed that they were very tasty!

In History, we learned all about St. Brendan the Navigator.  We enjoyed writing a diary extract of a day in the life of a navigator like St. Brendan!

We also studied “Games and Pastimes” in History.  Did you know that children still play games that our Great-Grandparents played many years ago?  The children were then given a challenge: to create a simple game of their own, using recyclable things.  They had to present their game to the other children in the class and give them the opportunity to play that game.  They did a great job!

In Visual Arts, we looked at the life of Claude Monet, his work and the techniques he used when he painted his many famous paintings!  We then created our very own Monet inspired paintings!

We also created pictures called “Many Hands Make Light Work” using our hands and various designs and paper!

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we made candle holders and cards for our loved ones!

We also learned how to weave circularly on a paper plate!

We also wrote about what Love means to us all and some children wrote acrostic poems!

Well done boys and girls on all your hard work over the past few weeks!

The Junior Classroom have started the New Year off on a great note! In History, the children made their own Class Resolutions and drew pictures to illustrate them!!

The children also completed a worksheet on their hopes for 2017. Many of the children hope to try eat new foods and also try new things this year!

Following the Christmas break, the children explored their senses in Science and completed a worksheet depicting their senses at Christmas!

In Art, the children made their own penguins out of toilet roll inserts. Did you know that there is a penguin called the Macaroni Penguin! He has a crazy hairstyle so you may recognise him in our photograph below!!

The children have been learning about the uses of Water as well as places where water is found. We learned a poem called “Water” and the children drew lovely pictures to illustrate the poem.

In support of Literacy, the children visited the local library for a storytelling session and also got the opportunity to pick some new books for our classroom library.

The children took part in an Art competition for the local pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk” Didn’t they do a great job designing a poster for the fairytale!!

Finally in Maths, the children made a 2017 calendar for our classroom which they designed and coloured themselves!!

Well done to all the children in the Junior Classroom for a great month’s work!! 🙂

New Year and plenty of cheer in the Senior Room!

We have been very busy during the month of January, we’ve enjoyed having Mr Chadwick as well as Ms Power teaching us. Take a look and see all the different things we’ve completed so far this year.

To begin with we reviewed 2016 and wrote up our New Years Resolutions for 2017.

In Gaeilge our topic was ‘An Aimsir.’ We looked at different weather based pictures and wrote up what was happening in each.

In Art we created our silhouettes, can you guess who’s who?!!

We also created our own sports jersey.

In Geography we have enjoyed learning lots about Greece including their climate, food, plants and culture.

Our topic in Science was Boglands of Ireland. We looked at all the diverse plants and animals found there. Did you know Ireland contains 50% of Western Europe’s Boglands?

Finally in English and History we have been learning all about The Irish Famine in the 1840s. We read the novel Under the Hawthorn Tree which was set in famine times. We also found out lots about this topic in History and completed a class project based on the topic.

The pupils in the Senior Room have had lots on in December to keep them busy!

We lit candles in our candle holders which we painted back in November.

We created Nativity scenes and Christmas snowmen in Art.

In History we were fascinated to learn all about life in Medieval Times. We learned lots about society, life in towns and the country and daily life. We wrote up what we found to be most interesting from that time.

In Religious Education we learned all about Advent and made our class Advent Wreath. We lit a new candle on it each week.

We also made colourful Nativity lanterns.

In Gaeilge we wrote a cinquain (5 line poem) based on the topic of An Nollaig.

Finally we had great fun at the cinema, we went to see Moana and at our Christmas party, especially when a special person appeared!!

Merry Christmas everyone, see you in 2017!

🙂
