English

English is taught to all children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. Oral language, reading and writing are all encouraged and promoted throughout the school. The child’s reading and writing experience in school can contribute greatly to their cognitive, emotional and imaginative development. The children love to write stories, complete projects and post their blogs on the school website.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Junior Classroom!

The Christmas Preparations have begun at Wandesforde National School. To begin with, Junior & Senior Infants enjoyed a short trip to the Post Office at the start of December to post their letters to Santa!

The children then enjoyed putting some decorations on the Christmas Tree in the school hallway!

At the start of December, the children enjoyed learning about various aspects of Farming from Vincent O’ Sullivan, a local Heritage Specialist. They got to see and use a churn and even made their own butter!

Not only this but they also got to use a mill which ground the grains of wheat into flour!

In Support of the work covered on “Friendship” in SPHE during November, the children made their own ‘Friend ‘ship’ & wrote down the qualities they like in a friend on their ship.

In Gaeilge, the children designed their own Christmas Jumpers. Didn’t they do a wonderful job 🙂

The children worked with clay in Art and made Christmas Owls in support of work covered on owls and nocturnal animals in SESE this month!

They also enjoyed making their own reindeer using toilet roll inserts!

In support of work the children covered on “Light” in Science, they made their own Christmas Candles.

The children also did an In-Class Colouring Competition of Christmas Wreaths. Well done to all the children for such bright and colourful work!

As a little treat before the Christmas Holidays, the children decorated their own Christmas Cupcakes. Mmmmmm!!

Finally, Christmas would not be Christmas without the Nativity. Junior & Senior Infants played the role of donkeys, cows and sheep in our School Carol Service. A big thank you to all the parents for doing such a fantastic job on their costumes!!

Happy Christmas everybody and best wishes for 2016 . See you all in the New Year!!

December has been an eventful month for 4th, 5th & 6th Class. In Art we created colourful winter trees and highlighted them in gold and silver. We also shaded in our Christmas stars using different colour paints.

The preparation for Christmas is known as Advent and in Religious Education we learned all about this important time of year. We also made our own Advent Wreath and each pupil put some greenery in it. To mark Advent we also have an Advent Calendar with each pupil getting a treat from it during December.

An Nollaig was our theme in Gaeilge and we made our own Cartaí Nollaig and wrote poems ‘as Gaeilge’ based on the topic An Nollaig.

In English 4th Class read all about spiders and wrote up reports about them.

They also read The Apple Tree and illustrated all the things which got stuck to the tree.

5th and 6th Class read a story called ‘Christmas’ and completed character investigation sheets about the main character Jimeen in the story.

We performed our play ‘Hosanna Rock’ in St. Mary’s on the 21st. Well done to all the boys and girls on a great performance. Finally a special visitor came to see us on Monday …… Santa!! We all enjoyed his visit and gifts! 🙂

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all in the Senior Room! See you in 2016!!

Another month has flown by in 4th, 5th & 6th Class. We have been busy working in lots of different areas. In Art we made our own clay pencil holders  and painted them bright colours.  We also made colourful reflective pictures.

In Gaeilge we listened to instructions in Irish and drew pictures based on the topic ‘éadaí’

4th class worked on symmetry in Maths and drew in the other side of these owls and ostriches, showing their knowledge of symmetry and great drawing skills. They also created pizzas with symmetrical toppings.

World War 1 was a topic we studied in History and we learned lots of information about the war. We wrote about it and made our own poppies.

In English 5th and 6th class read about polar animals and wrote up a report on an animal of their choice.

For Science Week we participated in a workshop in the library. We learned all about robotics and then made our own crocodile robots with snapping jaws!!

Winter is certainly here and the children have had a busy month in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class!  In Literacy, the children wrote their own shape poems about Winter.  They used snowmen and snowflake templates to create their wintery poems!

In History, we learned about the Totem Pole and the significance of the carvings on beautiful structures.  The children then created their own Totem Poles for all to see!

In Geography, we discussed various occupations and the children spoke about what they would like to do when they are older!  Some want to be doctors, vets and even movie stars!  Watch this space!

In Visual Arts, we learned about warm and cool colours on the spectrum.  The children then created their own “Leaping Lizards” using their choice of warm and cool colours….

We also created “Aliens and Robots” through the medium of collage.  Aren’t there some interesting creations on display?!

We also learned about the famous French Artist Henri Matisse and then re-created our own abstract art.

We also looked at types of houses and homes around the world.  We came to the conclusion that we are all very lucky to have the lovely homes that we do have!

And finally, well done to the 4th Class pupils who visited our classroom on Monday, 30th November to read out stories from the books that they wrote themselves!  They did a wonderful job!  Here is a picture of a few of their creations!  Well done 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class on a great month’s work!
