Special Occasions

We are a very busy school! This year as a treat, we all went to the Gaeity Theatre to see “Aladdin”. This was kindly paid for by the Board of Management and we had a fantastic day. Sometimes we hold a Carol Service or Christmas Play in St. Mary’s Church just before the Christmas holidays and then come back to the school for a party. All the parents are invited back for tea/coffee and to see our Christmas art and craft.

Middle Room brought to their senses!

Date posted: 3rd December 2016 | Category Blog, Christmas, Class Work, English, Geography, History, Middle Classroom, Religious Education, Science, SPHE, Visual Arts |

November saw the Middle Room becoming more acquainted with their own senses. Our topic in science was ‘Sound’ and as part of that we learned all about our ears. We also looked at how sound is actually made. In SPHE we tried out Mindfulness. As part of our introduction to Mindfulness, we undertook some ‘mindful eating’, paying full attention to the eating experience and all the senses involved, sight, touch, smell and taste.

Continuing on the same theme we wrote a sensory poem called ‘Winter’. Below is a sample of some of the amazing poems that the children wrote.

 Winter

Sounds like fire burning, people laughing and snowballs.

Smells like turkey, Brussels sprouts, carrots and Christmas pudding.

Tastes like chocolate and sweets.

Looks like a Christmas feast.

Feels like Santa’s coming!

Winter

Sounds like children playing in the snow and people putting on fires.

Smells like Christmas dinner and Christmas pudding.

Tastes like hot chocolate with marshmallows and hot tea.

Looks like sticks being brought in and fires lit.

Feels like warm, cosy duvets.

To link with the work on the season of winter we used the technique of using a ‘vanishing point’ in art to give perspective to our drawing of a winter scene – a tree lined avenue. It was beautiful to drive into Castlecomer during the last week of November and see the trees looking just as sparkly as our pictures.

Another theme for this month was ‘Egypt’, forming a central part of our history, geography and RE lessons. The children learned some fascinating facts about Ancient Egypt. They compared the similarities and differences between life in Ancient Egypt and Modern Egypt. In Art the children made Egyptian collars which look very ornate on the wall.

At the start of the month Dogs Trust came in to visit the children. They learned all about the work they do. They learned specifically how to safely approach a dog without spooking it.

As we are nearing the end of November minds are beginning to turn to Christmas. The children painted giant toy soldiers for display in Kilkenny’s new Yuletide festival. They will be displayed in the gardens in Butler House in Kilkenny City.

They also made some lovely decorations to hang around the classroom. Won’t they look lovely!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wandesforde!

Date posted: 30th November 2016 | Category Blog, Christmas, Music, Special Occasions |

Christmas has started early at Wandesforde School! As you can see, we all have been very busy preparing our Christmas Shoeboxes for Team Hope.

The school has sent 46 beautifully packaged shoeboxes to children in poorer parts of the world for Christmas. Thank you to all the families who took part in this very worthwhile cause 🙂

As well as this the children have been busy designing, painting and decorating soldiers which will be on display on the Parade during Yulefest in Kilkenny!

Make sure to pop into Kilkenny with your family at the weekends during December to see the children’s artwork on display and also to explore all the Yulefest activities of music, food, craft and entertainment for friends and family. See visitkilkenny.ie for more information.

Not only this, but the school was invited to the launch of Christmas at the Discovery Park! They got to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and went on a little walk through the Elf Village with them too!!

We then enjoyed singing some Christmas Carols together with Santa, Mrs. Claus and members of our families and the local community. It was  a great day and thank you to everybody who came along to see us on the day!!

This October,  the Junior Classroom have been as busy as ever!

As it’s the last month of Autumn, the children printed their own Colourful Autumnal Trees using wooden corks to brighten up our classroom!

In Science, the children learned about the planets in our Solar System and displayed the pattern of the planets on black sugar paper. They also learned a “Mnemonic” (Memory Trick) to remember the pattern of the planets. “Many Vile Earthlings Munch Jam Sandwiches Under Newspaper Piles!

The children participated in Halloween Colouring Competitions for the Local Library and the Folens Book Company. Below are pictures of some of  their colourful entries!

In preparation for Christmas, the children had to design their own Christmas Card this month so that they will be ready in time for families to buy them in December. Didn’t they do a great job!!

The children also visited the local Fire Station to further support work covered in SPHE & SESE on Fire Safety. They particularly enjoyed playing the role of fire officer on the day!

During the month, the children continued to enjoy learning new skills in Rugby with Noel Devlin. They are really looking and playing the part!!

In Maths, the children played many board games together this month. First Class enjoyed playing Snakes and Ladders together and Junior & Senior Infants played Halloween Roll and Cover with their partner.

In preparation for Halloween, the children made their own egg carton spooky spiders in Art!

The children particularly enjoyed designing their own Number Monsters this month in Maths many of which are very spooky and scary!

In Drama, the children played many cooperative games such as “Ghost, Ghost, Witch” which follows the same principle as the game “Duck, Duck, Goose”

They also managed to write Halloween Cards to their Penpals in Finland 🙂

Finally, on Friday, 28th October, the children dressed up in costume for Halloween. Well done to all the children on creating such colourful and creative costumes!

Happy Halloween Everybody!

Hallowe’en fun for 5th and 6th Class

Date posted: 28th October 2016 | Category Blog, Class Work, English, Geography, Green Flag, Hallow'een, Irish, Local Visits, Our Work on Display, Science, Senior Classroom, Visual Arts |

Hallowe’en is just around the corner and the pupils in 5th and 6th class have been doing lots of fun and creative work around this topic.

In English we wrote Spooky Stories with a Hallowe’en theme.

Art has been all about spiders and fireworks, here are our finished pictures.

In Geography, Science and English we have been learning all about the Rainforest, we wrote up information on the importance of rainforests and labelled diagrams of the layers of a rainforest.

We also conducted an experiment to see how water travels to the leaves in a plant. We could see this process in action by adding red food dye to the water.

Ar an bhFeirm was the topic we covered in Gaeilge. The pupils wrote up a story in Irish about a day on the farm.

We are now working on our 5th Green Flag and the theme is biodiversity. With this in mind the senior pupils went on a nature walk to the Discovery Park and noted all the different aspects of nature they observed.

Finally we enjoyed baking Hallowe’en cupcakes on Friday as a treat before the holidays.

Summer Fun in the Senior Room

Date posted: 4th July 2016 | Category Blog, Class Work, Geography, History, Our Work on Display, Religious Education, Science, Senior Classroom, Special Occasions, SPHE, Visual Arts |

Another year has come and gone in the Senior Room. We have completed lots of work in different areas in the past few weeks. Take a look and see what we have been up to!

In Art we created these colourful hand print parrots and painted in a jungle background.

We also drew fruit and vegetables from observation in colour and black and white.

Summer fashion inspired us to create these colourful flip flops and we added real sand to the pictures to give it that realistic beach feeling!

In History we spent time learning all about life in the 1960s. We looked at fashion, music, schools and pastimes.

The sun was a subject we discovered lots about in Geography and Science. We also created bright sunset collages in Art.

In Science we also learned all about our lungs and breathing and  labelled diagrams of the lungs. We did experiments to see how our breathing changed after exercise.

In SPHE we looked at all the positive things which pupils have achieved over the years. They created these ‘Achievement Shields’ showing their skills, talents and achievements over the years.

Finally we had our End of Year Service and presentation to 6th class. We wish Rebecca, Nicole, Alan, Emma, Ashley, Kate, Amy & Dylan all the best as they leave Wandesforde and begin secondary school next year.

Have an enjoyable summer everyone! 🙂
