Our Green School’s Committee meet once a month to discuss green issues with Ms. Power, the green school’s co-ordinator. Recently we held a green school’s poster competition . There were 9 winners and each child received a €10 voucher for Argos. The title of the competiton was “Energy”.

As part of the Visual Arts Curriculum, the children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class have been working in groups to create a construction of their choice using rubbish!  Without any help at all, the results were very impressive and are on display in the school corridor for all to see.  The children in 1st class created a “Rocket” using a bottle, cardboard, plastic and paint….

One 2nd class group made a “Turtle” using egg cartons, cardboard, yoghurt cartons and paint….

Another 2nd class group made the “Titanic” using cereal boxes, toilet roll inserts, cardboard, lids and paint….

And finally, the 3rd class pupils created a “Crocodile” using cereal boxes, egg cartons, cardboard, kitchen roll inserts and lots of green paint….

Well done boys and girls.  From lots of rubbish, great constructions were made!

Last week Ms Dennehy’s class and Ms Power’s class went out to the school garden. There we harvested all the vegetables which had been growing over the summer. We got carrots, potatoes and onions!

When we went inside  5th and 6th Class prepared the soup for everyone. They peeled, chopped and cooked all the vegetables. 4th Class made delicious brown bread to go with the soup!

Everybody then had a mug of delicious soup with home made brown bread! It was yummy!!

Over the past few days, because the weather has been nice, we decided to plant our potatoes for the Summer!  The children in 2nd and 3rd Class took to the garden, tools at the ready, to plant the seed potatoes!

The onions were planted a few weeks ago and are getting bigger!

Let’s hope we have lots of nice vegetables for our soup in September!

Date posted: 7th February 2012 | Category Blog, Green Flag |

The new Green Schools Committee has been voted in. The new members are Declan, Owen, Mark, Dylan, Daniel, Shauna, Rebecca and Kyle. Each class is represented on the committee. We have started work towards our 3rd Green Flag, on the topic of water. Recently 4th, 5th and 6th class designed signs to display around the school to encourage people to save water.

We have also looked at the various ways we use water all around us.

In assembly we had a quiz on the topic of water. Well done to Edward, Kyle, Keith, Ashley, Rebecca, Tadhg and Lisa who won! We will keep you updated on the work we are doing through the year.

Wonderful Vegetable Soup!

On Tuesday, 13th September, the whole school went out to the garden to pick the vegetables that have been growing over the Summer for our soup.  We picked parsnip, turnip, potatoes and even had some lettuce, though not in the soup!  As you can see from the photos, we had a nice amount of vegetables.  Thank you so much to Mrs. Dooley, who very kindly made the soup for the whole school on Thursday.  We also had some lovely fresh brown bread with our soup. Delicious!!!!
