Green Schools Action Day at Wandesforde!

Date posted: 7th April 2014 | Category Blog, Class Work, Green Flag, Junior Classroom, Middle Classroom, Senior Classroom |

Recently we held our Green Schools Action Day. We had lots of fun with a quiz, games, art work and experiments all based on water. First we had a whole school quiz all about interesting water facts. Pupils were divided into teams with all classes mixed up together.

In our teams we also solved word problems all about water.

100_5554 Congratulations to the winning team who each received a pencil case made from recycled rubber, pencils made from recycled newspaper and rulers made with recycled CDs.

We also looked at different water experiments. We learned that oranges float normally but sink when peeled!

We also saw that eggs normally sink but float in salty water and oil floats on water but washing up liquid makes oil and water mix together.

An effervescent tablet brought water to the top of the oil, it looked like a lava lamp!

We also had fun painting a water barrel which we will use to harvest rainwater. The water we save will be used to water plants and vegetables in our school garden.

During the last two years we have been working hard to attain our 3rd Green Flag based on the theme of water. With this in mind the Green Schools Committee decided to hold an art competition for all classes based on saving water at home and in school. Here are the competition entries.

Welcome back from 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!

Date posted: 16th September 2013 | Category Blog, English, Green Flag, Middle Classroom, Music, Religious Education, Science, Visual Arts |

Welcome back everybody from 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class!  We have all settled in very well to our work since the 27th August.  Have a look at what we have been up to over the past 3 weeks!

In RE, we have discussed the theme of “Belonging”.  To show that we are part of God’s family, we each handprinted leaves on a large tree and wrote our names in marker.  We also read a poem about belonging to various “families”, in school, at home and in other aspects of our lives.

In Science we have been learning about Volcanoes.  We created our own volcanoes using lots of different materials, such as cotton wool, glue and paint.  We then used the end of a paintbrush to create the lava exploding from the crater.  In Music we learned a song about a volcano called “Popocatepetl”.  We had great fun re-creating the explosive sounds a volcano makes using body percussion…

In English, we wrote about the fun and activities we got up to over the Summer break.  The children also drew super pictures highlighting their favourite part of the holidays…

In History, 1st and 2nd Class have been learning about their families and they had to design a crest to depict what was important in their family’s life.  Some families enjoy sport, some cooking, some farming and some the outdoor life.  Have a look at their great designs…

In Art we discussed colours that work well together and colours that clash.  The children had to colour in Jolly Jesters.  This took a bit of time and effort as there was a pattern to follow in each part of the jester.  Don’t they look really well on the wall?

And finally, we got to pick our potatoes!  We had a really good crop this year.  The senior classes very kindly cut the potatoes and we had delicious wedges for our lunch.  They were yummy!

A geologist visits Wandesforde School!

Date posted: 3rd May 2013 | Category Blog, Geography, Green Flag, Middle Classroom, Science, Senior Classroom |

Last Wednesday a geologist came to visit our school. The boys and girls from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class had the chance to learn about the different types of rocks and find out how they were formed. They also learned about how much water we use every day and where our waste water goes to, supporting the work we are doing to get our next Green Flag for water.

Here are the boys and girls examining various kinds of rocks!
